Boot Images
Boot Images
• Only add the drivers you NEED
• NEED = Test, Test, Test
• The more drivers you add, the longer the
boot time is
• Adding unnecessary drivers can increase
the WIM size by 5-20%
• ConfigMgr increases the WinPE image by
roughly 9% alone

• DEMOS
Application Mapping
• Process of automatically
installing/upgrading applications that were
previously installed
• All methods use a detection method or
some sort
Application Mapping - MDT
• Has been part of MDT/BDD for many
iterations, most people just didn’t know it
was there! (Easter egg?)
• Using ConfigMgr inventory database in
combination with a mapping table
• Ability to upgrade older versions of
applications automatically
Application Mapping - MDT
• When we run the TS on client machine:
– ZTIGather processes customsettings.ini
– PackageMapping creates Packages array
– OS Installed (and a few other things)
– “Install Software” step processes array and
installs packages
Application Mapping - UDI
• Introduced with MDT 2010 Update 1
• Ability to create mappings based on
Product ID or ConfigMgr execution history
• No link to existing hardware inventory
• MDT 2012/UDI added mapping support for
the new Application Model
Application Mapping - UDI
• When we run the TS on client machine:
– UDI preflight runs Application Discovery
– Discovered items presented in wizard (based
on UDI configuration)
– OS Installed (and a few other things)
– “Install Software” step processes Packages
– “Install Application” step processes
Applications
Application Mapping
• Gotcha’s
– Licensed vs Unlicensed applications
– Bare metal scenarios
• MDT VS UDI
– Unwanted installations
– Don’t use both methods, pick one
