• The Britons had to defend
themselves on two sides
• Scots and Picts in the north
• Angles, Saxons and Jutes
invaded the east coast
• More Angles and Saxons
arrived – pushed the Britons
to Cornwall, Scotland, Wales
and across the Channel to
Brittany ( 3 living Celtic
languages – Welsh, Scottish
and Irish Gaelic )

Who were the Angles and Saxons?
• People from north Germany, Denmark and
northern Holland
• Their own lands were often flooded and there
was not enough land for everyone
• Came on ships across the North Sea
• The Romans called them “barbarians”
How did the Anglo-Saxons live?
• Most Anglo-Saxons were farmers
• Lived in family groups in villages/ long wooden
houses
• Lived close to the sea or big rivers/ sailors
• Destroyed Roman cities – burnt them down
• Most Anglo-Saxons worshipped many gods and
goddesses/similar beliefs to the Celts
• Most people in Roman Britain were Christians
Kings and kingdoms
• In about 600 AD there were
7 Anglo-Saxon kingdoms Wessex, Sussex, Essex, East
Anglia, Northumbria,
Mercia, Kent
• 829 - Ecgbert of Wessex –
united the kingdoms = 1st
king of England
• 8th - 9th centuries – more
invasions – Vikings
• The Vikings came in their
longships – attacked
monasteries and churches to
steal gold – burnt many
villages

Alfred the Great
• Most famous Anglo-Saxon king
• Fought the Vikings and then
made peace with them
• He gave them a piece of land
along the east coast
“ Danelaw ” – Vikings settled
there
• Ruled with a council of nobles
and Church leaders – witan
• Alfred was educated –
translated books from Latin into
English ( the Bible )
• Built warships to guard the east
coast from Viking raiders –
beginning of English navy

Life after Alfred …
• English kings recaptured
land from the Vikings
• In 1016 - Danish king
Canute became king of
England
• After his death – his sons
were not able to keep the
kingdom together
• Anglo-Saxon king Edward
came to throne (very
religious – called “Edward
the Confessor “ ) – died in
1066 as the last AngloSaxon king
