Edward I (1272 - 1307)
• Wanted to unite Great Britain - attempts to
overrule Wales and Scotland
• Development of English language – king
could speak English as well as French
• End 14th century – French was not taught at
English schools any more
• Success in Wales – introduced English laws /
not officially united till 1536 (Henry VIII)
Edward I (1272 - 1307)
• Edward I wanted his son to marry the daughter of
the dead Scottish king / she died on the way from
Norway
• John Balliol became Scottish king – did not
recognize Edward `s sovereignty
• Edward attacked Scotland, captured Balliol and
stole the sacred Stone of Scone ( part of the throne
of English monarchs)
• The Scots rose under William Wallace – Edward
lost Scotland / Robert Bruce was crowned in Scone
in 1306
Hundred Years War (1337 – 1361)
• War for territories and money
• Edward III and his army
plundered many rich
merchant cities in France
(Caen, Calais) – rich booty
• French didn`t know how to
protect themselves – there
had never been a war before –
started hating the English
• The English won at Crécy and
Poitiers
• 1361 – peace – England
gained some territories

• Decrease in population (from 4 million to 2.5
million people)
• Not enough people to work (better paid)
• Richer class of merchants – kings borrows money
from them in return for places in the Parliament /
influence international policy
Hundred Years War – 2nd part
• 1415 – Henry V started fighting
again
• Battle at Azincourt – the English
won, got to Paris, Henry V
became an heir to French
throne
• Joan of Arch – helped the
French dauphin find selfconfidence and free Orleans
• The dauphin Charles was
anointed in Reims – break at
war – the French won
• The English lost all territories in
France except Calais
