He enrolled in graduate studies
at Boston University, completing
his doctorate in 1953 and
receiving the degree in 1955.
In Boston he met and married
Coretta Scott, with whom he had
four children: Yolanda, Martin
Luther III, Dexter Scott and
Bernice.
In his family there
were three Martin
Luther :
•Martin Luther
•Martin Luther Junior
•Martin Luther III
In 1955 he organized the
Montgomery bus boycott
because the buses were
reserved to white people.
Between 1958 and 1963 he was
arrested several times for his work in
defense of human rights.
On 28 August 1963 Martin Luther King
Jr. organized a historic march to
Washington to show the importance of
solving the nation's racial problems.
About 250,000 people
participated in this
event.
250,000 people gathered
and listened to Martin Luther
King, his immortal words
were: "I have a dream that
my four children will one day
live in a nation where they
will not be judged by the
colour of their skin, but by
the content of their
character".
On October 14, 1964, King received the
Nobel Peace Prize for fighting against
racial inequality through nonviolence.
In 1968 Martin was
planning a national
occupation of
Washington, called the
Poor People's
Campaign,(this was an
effort to gain economic
justice for poor people in
the United States)
He was assassinated on 4 April 1968, in
Memphis, Tennessee, where he was trying to
help the striking garbage workers. The
funeral was held on 9 April 1968 at Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta.
On 22 august 2011 in Washington a
square dedicated to Martin Luther King
was inaugurated, with a statue (9 metres
high) that represents him.
