Youth Options Program
State statute allowing high school students to take
college level classes for high school and college
credit.

Good academic standing
Not a child at risk, no disciplinary problems
Attend technical college or university for one or more
classes
Responsibility of School District
• School counselor will aid student in choosing courses
• School board determines if requested courses are
comparable to classes offered in district
• School District pays for tuition and fees for noncomparable courses
– 18 credit limit over Jr. & Sr. years
• School District pays for books and other necessary
materials directly related to the course that will not
become property of student
Responsibility of Student
• Work with high school guidance counselor to choose class(es)
• Send YO form to school board for approval
– March 1 for fall; October 1 for spring
• Send YO form to NWTC after approval is granted
– May 15 for fall; November 15 for spring

Attend orientation and register for class(es)
Inform school district of enrollment
Pick up textbooks before semester starts
Attend class(es) at NWTC
Return textbooks and materials to school at end of semester,
except for those paid by student
Responsibility of Parent
• Make sure student is in compliance with
compulsory school attendance
• Pay for comparable courses or over 18 credits
• Reimburse school district for dropped or failed
courses
 Class must be dropped prior to the 1st day for 100 % refund.

• Receive and process Youth Options forms
• Admit students to Youth Options program and inform of
acceptance
• Assist student in enrolling in classes
• Inform high school of student enrollment at NWTC
• Bill high school for tuition
• Notify NWTC Bookstore of Youth Option status so you are
not obligated to pay for books associated with coursework
covered by Youth Options Program
• Send final semester grade to high school.
Accommodations
• If you have an IEP, you must contact the
Accomodations office (Kelly Schumacher, 4986390 or Sue Peterson, 498-6267) Your school
does not contact our office.
• Accommodations provided in high school may
or may not be offered during college. There are
differences!
Academic Advising
• Assists with scheduling courses
• Answers questions about programs of interest
and requirements

• Follow-up with any academic referrals

Additional Information
• Differences between high school and college
– Courses, instructors, studying, testing, grades
– Time management formula: One credit = 3 hrs/week
for attendance and homework
– FREE! Tutoring available
• Acceptance to Youth Options is NOT acceptance
to an NWTC program

pursuing your education
• Request an official transcript to be sent when
you are applying to your college

Be Prepared!
• Go to www.nwtc.edu to find out when books are available
– The bookstore is on the first floor, Rm # SC146 right inside the main
entrance of the Student Center Building.
– Bring Student Class Schedule, Student ID number
– Tell bookstore you are a Youth Options student
– At the end of the semester return the books to your high school
• Check Student Class Schedule for specific dates and times
• Please call Amy Schultz at 920-498-5416 if you have questions.
