Setting the Scene
• You’ve been giving your site location address which is a single
carriageway on a busy high street with a 30mph limit
• Weather conditions are dry and sunny
• The job entails a shaft and heading
What are the 5 key risks you should consider before you start
to break ground?
SUMMER HAZARDS
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A
HEALTHY TAN!
• A tan is a sign that the skin has been damaged.
• Too much sun will speed up the ageing of your skin, making it leathery,
mottled and wrinkled, but the most serious effect is an increased chance
of developing skin cancer.
• Over the last 25 years, the rate of skin cancer has risen faster than any
other top 10 cancers in males & females.
• Construction workers are six times more likely to develop skin cancer
than the general population.
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF?
 Keep your top on
 Wear a hat with a brim or a flap that covers the ears and the
back of the neck.
 Stay in the shade whenever possible, during your breaks and
especially at lunch time.
 Use a high factor sunscreen of at least SPF15 on any exposed
skin.
 Check your skin regularly for any unusual moles or spots. See a
doctor promptly if you find anything that is changing in shape,
size or colour, itching or bleeding.
What is Dehydration?
• Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in.
• Water is essential for a healthy body
Some of the early warning signs of dehydration include:




feeling thirsty
lightheaded
having dark coloured, strong-smelling urine
passing urine less often than usual
What to do to Prevent Dehydration
 Drink plenty of fluids if you're dehydrated. This can be water,
semi-skimmed milk, diluted squash or fruit juice, but it's best
to avoid caffeine and fizzy drinks.
 Drink often and in small amounts
 Increase your fluid intake while exercising and during hot
weather
