What are SATs?
• Statutory Assessment Tests which all pupils take at the end of Key Stage Two.
• They provide a
snapshot
of attainment in English and Maths.
• The tests will take place week beginning Monday 13 th May 2013.
The English Tests

Reading Writing Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar
• Reading Test -15 minutes reading time -45 minutes to answer questions -Test can include a wide range of texts -Total of 50 marks
Writing • • Replacing the writing test given previously, teacher assessment levels will be used this year.
A child’s result for English writing will be a judgement of their work across Year 6. Grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will be assessed as part of their writing, but their creativity and writing style is also be evaluated.

The Mathematics Tests
• There are three tests - test A (non calculator) - test B (calculator) - mental arithmetic • • • Test A and B have 40 marks each Mental arithmetic has 20 marks Level 4 = approximately 48 marks.

What are the results used for?

Assessment
• Teacher assessment results are also reported alongside the test results. Both have
equal status
and provide complementary information about a pupils attainment.
• Research has shown that children who achieve Level 4 at the end of Key Stage two will gain the expected five GCSEs with grades A-C at the end of Key Stage three.
Ways to help your child
• Read with your child at every opportunity • Help your child learn their multiplication tables • Encourage them to use educational games on the computer (see websites) • Talk about their learning • Go through some practice questions together •Encourage them to do their best
During the test week please make sure your child: -gets enough sleep -eats breakfast -comes to school with a mid morning snack and water bottle -Is encouraged… they cannot FAIL the SATs!
