English is split into 3 different areas:
 Reading Comprehension (Test)
 Writing (Teacher Assessment)
 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling
Test (New for 2013)
 There will be a separate level for
Reading, Grammar,Punctuation and
Spelling and Writing.

English Comprehension
(Reading Test)







15 minutes to read a text.
45 minutes to answer questions.
Test carries 50 marks
Children can refer back to the text.
Test focuses on several different types of
text.
Reading for understanding is essential.
Children will be required to refer to text to
justify their responses.

This is an on-going process. Children
are assessed across a range of writing.

Changes for 2013



Children’s English writing result will be a
teacher assessment judgement of their work
across Year 6.
The LA will carry out external moderation
visits in selected schools.
Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Test [will
not form part of the overall English level for
this year. Will be appear in school’s data and
in Performance Tables.
Examples of Independent Writing
The task provides information about a
fictional character. The children are
required to use the information to write
a biographical piece, using the
appropriate features, language,
sentence structure and punctuation.
 [In 45 minutes].


Memories of the School Year

The task asks the children to imagine
the class is making a book of memories
of the year at school. Everyone in the
class will write a page of the book
about their final year. Again prompts
are provided and the children have to
produce three ‘chunky’ paragraphs in 20
minutes. Again, language, sentence
structure and punctuation are
Shorter Writing Task Example
Grammar, Punctuation and
Spelling Test [New for 2013]
The test covers a wide range of
elements [e.g. identifying verbs,
adverbs, basic punctuation, speech
marks, pronouns, articles etc]. 45
minutes to complete
 Within this test is a Spelling Test. 20
words to spell. Words given are within a
context.


There are three test papers:
Paper A which lasts 45 minutes and carries 40
marks (Non-calculator).
Paper B which lasts 45 minutes and carries 40
marks (Calculator allowed).
Mental maths test which lasts approx 20
minutes and carries 20 marks.
Questions will test all areas but now focus an
application, reasoning and problem solving.
Equipment Needed

All equipment needed for these tests
will be provided by the school. It
changes each year according to the
requirements of the questions.

Support your children with any homework tasks set
and make sure they are completed [quality time and

Encourage them to use the suggested websites,

Encourage them to practise methods [ a few but
often]
Whenever writing encourage them to be more
thorough in the self-checking process [Basics are
there! Key Skills are there!]
Whenever possible, read with your child [not just
reading books!] and ask them questions.
