Introduction to Health, Safety for staff at the University of Northampton Students’ Union

The Law

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

• Our Duties: The University of Northampton Students’ Union has a duty to ensure your health, safety and welfare whilst working at the University: – Provision and maintenance of plant & systems of work; – Safety in relation to handling, storage and transport of articles and substances; – Information, instruction, training, supervision; – – Appropriate & safe means of access & egress; Adequate arrangements for employee’s welfare.

The Law

Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

• • • Your Duties Take reasonable care for your own health & safety and that of other persons.

You have a responsibility under the above Act to co-operate with the SU on all health & safety matters.

You also have a responsibility not to interfere with any item that has been provided in the interest of safety, for example fire alarms, equipment, machinery, PPE and signage.

Fire Safety

• • • Although the evacuation arrangements will differ in each building you should make yourself aware of the arrangements in that area.

When entering a new building/room take note of the fire exit locations.

Familiarise yourself with the Emergency Action sign on the

back of all exit doors.

Evacuation

• Evacuate quickly but calmly, ensuring that all fire doors are closed behind you.

• Usher students/staff/visitors along the evacuation route as you leave.

• Report to the designated Assembly Point • Report anyone that you know is missing • DO NOT re-enter the building until you have been

informed to do so by someone in authority.

PEEP’s & Safe Refuges

• • • • If you require assistance during an evacuation you should inform your line manager.

We will then complete a ‘Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan’ (PEEP) for you The PEEP will detail how your evacuation will take place This may include the use of Safe Refuges or other equipment such as Deaf Watch.

Summoning First Aid Assistance Calling for a First Aider

• • During the office hours, if you need a First Aider, contact Reception in the first instance.

At other times, find a Shift Supervisors or Duty Manager who are ALL qualified first aiders.

Life Threatening Emergencies

• If the incident appears to be life threatening and requires an ambulance, then call an ambulance, •

DO NOT WAIT FOR A FIRST AIDER.

Call (9)999 .

Life Threatening Emergencies

• • It is important that in order to direct the ambulance to the required location Security are informed on Ext 2777 (Park Campus) or Ext 3777 (Avenue Campus) as soon as an emergency call has been made.

The caller should give the following information to Security: o Exact location of incident o Extension number of the nearest phone to the incident o Name of the First Aider/person in charge

First Aid Rooms

• A room has been provided for First Aid purposes at both campuses. These can be found in the following location:

Park Campus

Holdenby 55

Avenue Campus

Maidwell Yellow 47 • • Access is obtained through a code issued by contacting Security .

The room is a place for patients to rest or receive treatment and is stocked with first aid supplies and relevant consumables.

Hazards

• • • Hazards include – Wet floors – Loose wiring – ?

– Put wet floor signs up and wipe the floor!

Others you can’t solve ….

Hazard Reporting

NEVER PASS BY AN UNSAFE SITUATION WITHOUT DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Report all problems that you can’t solve to the DUTY MANAGER or your LINE MANAGER

IMMEDIATELY

.

Any delay could put you or someone else in danger.

Reporting Incidents/Accidents

• • We have a responsibility to hold information on all incidents / accidents and to report major incidents / accidents to the HSE. You MUST report INCIDENTS and ACCIDENTS to the Duty Manager or Shift Supervisor.
