Fire Safety in Residential Accommodation
Fire safety is very important in halls of residence
Smoking is prohibited in all University buildings, including all student
bedrooms
Candles & incense sticks are prohibited
Fire detection
− Smoke detection (in bedrooms & hallways) can be set off by:
– Smoke from cigarettes, cooking fumes, candles & incense
sticks, aerosol sprays, dust, water vapour (hair straighteners,
dryers) etc
− Heat detection (kitchens) is set off by heat rise only
Keep fire doors shut to prevent spread of fire & smoke
Keep common areas free from debris/obstructions
Fire Evacuation
Alarm is a loud bell or siren – tested weekly in each building
Fire Drills – two per year in each building
Residence fire drills are in the first couple of weeks of term
Know your fire exit route – don’t assume you can escape by the
same route you entered the building
If you see a fire:
− Activate the Fire Alarm – use Fire Alarm Call Points, (red boxes)
located by exits
− Fire extinguishers, but only use if trained
− Evacuate the building, follow the green signs
− Call the Fire Service on 999
Fire Evacuation
If you hear the fire alarm:
Leave the building by the nearest exit (follow signs)
Proceed to the Assembly Point – location is given on the signs by the
exits
Fire Warden, Estates or Security will be in attendance
No roll call – most buildings are open access
Inform the Fire Warden, Estates, Security or the Fire Service if you think
someone may be left inside the building
Do not leave the Assembly Point
Do not go back into the building until told to do so
Fire Fighting Equipment
Do not use fire fighting equipment (extinguishers & hoses)
unless you have been trained
Fire fighting equipment can be dangerous – leave it alone and
please report any equipment tampered with to Reception
Disciplinary action will be taken for falsely discharging fire
fighting equipment
Fire Safety Signage
Please familiarise yourself with evacuation routes and fire action
notices as soon as you enter your accommodation/teaching facilities
Hazards and Defects
We need your help
Please report defects/hazards to Campus Reception, your Residential
Coordinator or your tutor
For example broken or damaged electrical appliances, windows, teaching
equipment, fire hazards, etc.
