Introduction
An emergency situation could occur at any moment.
Depending on the situation - an evacuation may be
ordered. Successful and safe evacuations require
careful planning, and a well-informed building
population.
This training presentation will provide you with information that you
need to know when you receive an order to evacuate.
How will you be notified?
What are the procedures?
What are your responsibilities?
EVACUATION NOTIFICATION

Notification to evacuate will be completed via
the following methods as time and the
situation permit:
Fire alarm
Telephone
Building/Department Safety Coordinators
1040 on the AM dial
Phone Trees…






Are used to provide information to employees via telephone.
May be used during campus off hours to inform employees NOT to come to
campus.
If you are responsible for maintaining a phone tree, it should be reviewed often
to ensure they are up-to-date.
If you are responsible for calling employees, but can’t reach someone who is in
charge of calling another group of employees – you must make their calls for
them.
If you are responsible for calling employees, copies of phone trees should be
made accessible from home or the office.
If you are NOT responsible for calling others, this slide is for your information
only.

Campus Emergency Procedures
Manual
Includes information about the following:
- Fires/Explosions/Hazardous Materials Spills
- Workplace Violence
- Bomb threats/searches
- Earthquakes
- Important contact numbers
This manual can be found at:
www.csufresno.edu/police/emergency.htm
Please review it, and add it to your “favorites” list for easy access.
You may want to download a copy to keep in your desk to refer to as
needed. If you don’t have the ability to print copies from a campus
printer, please contact your Department Safety Coordinator to obtain a
hard copy.
BUILDING AND DEPARTMENT SAFETY
COORDINATORS

Building and Department Safety coordinators have been
selected for each campus building. During an emergency
requiring evacuation during regular business hours, these
individuals:
– act as liaison between building occupants and emergency
personnel.
– assist in determining if all occupants have safely evacuated
the building
– are in contact with emergency personnel via walkie-talkie.
– will be wearing an orange vest
A list of coordinators can be obtained from EH&S (8-7422)
EMERGENCY INFORMATION


This is an example of
an emergency information posting.
It can be found posted at the exits
of classrooms, offices and
conference rooms. It includes
the location where occupants
should assemble until further
direction is provided.
Faculty may want to
include a section in their
syllabi that refers to
emergency signs to prompt
student awareness of
posted notices
BUILDING OCCUPANT
RESPONSIBILITIES
Prior to an emergency:
 Review the emergency information posted in each classroom/office/conference room
 Review the campus emergency procedures manual
 Become familiar with exits of buildings in which you teach/work (building maps are
located in building hallways)
During an evacuation order:
 Immediately evacuate the building and proceed to the
designated assembly point. Doing so will help emergency
personnel determine if an occupant rescue is necessary.
 Use the “buddy system” and look out for someone else. Help each other get out of the
building. Be aware of occupants that need help.
 Follow the evacuation procedures, and direction provided by emergency personnel,
building/safety coordinators.
FACULTY MEMBERS


Are responsible for the orderly evacuation of the students in
the class they are teaching when an evacuation order is
given. This includes assisting students with disabilities in
the evacuation process. (see slides 16 & 17)
Provide leadership to ensure that evacuation procedures are
followed.
Most Department Safety Coordinators are not on campus
during the evening hours. Students will look to instructors
for help and direction.
Note: Students and staff should be encouraged to provide
notification before an emergency occurs if they suspect they
will need assistance with evacuating.
MANAGERS


Are responsible for the orderly evacuation of the employees
under their supervision when in the work area during an
evacuation order. This includes assisting employees with
disabilities in the evacuation process. (see slides 16 & 17)
Provide leadership to ensure that evacuation procedures are
followed.
Most Department Safety Coordinators are not on campus
during the evening hours. Staff will look to managers for
help and direction.
Note: Staff should be encouraged to provide notification before
an emergency occurs if they suspect they will need
assistance with evacuating.
BUILDING ONLY EVACUATION
PROCEDURES



Quickly exit the building using the nearest/safest building exit.
Proceed to the pre-designated building assembly point.
Inform the Safety/Building coordinator (or emergency
personnel) of:
– any student or occupant in need of rescue
– extent of injuries received by anyone in your group
– any hazardous condition such as fire or hazardous
materials
Do not leave the assembly point until:
A) the safety/building coordinator or emergency responder is
aware that you have safely exited the building
AND
B) it is safe to do so
CAMPUS WIDE EVACUATION
PROCEDURES
Once you’ve evacuated your building, emergency personnel may
advise you that a campus-wide evacuation is necessary.

Proceed to the closest of the four predetermined evacuation
points:

"V" Lot at Shaw and Woodrow
(temporary location is “A” Lot while “V” is under construction)



–
"G" Lot at Shaw and Cedar
Grassy Field at Barstow and Cedar
O'Neil Park at Barstow and Woodrow
See map on next slide.
Do not leave until emergency personnel inform you that it is
safe to do so.
CAMPUS EVACUATION ASSEMBLY POINTS
EVACUATING PERSONS WITH
DISABILITIES
Persons with limited mobility should observe the
following procedures when evacuating:




Move toward an exit, an elevator may be used except in
an earthquake or fire
Request assistance from others with overcoming
obstructions
If assistance is not available, the person requiring
assistance should remain by a wall near an exit, either
calling out for help, or blowing a whistle
Life Sliders are available in multi story buildings to assist
those who cannot effectively evacuate via stairs.
Evacuation of Persons with
Disabilities (Cont.)
Persons anticipating difficulty evacuating a building
are encouraged to:



review the various escape routes available, and locations
of life sliders
inform their department safety coordinator or supervisor
in advance of an emergency to assist with planning
Carry an emergency whistle
Persons with hearing or vision impairment are
encouraged to notify University Police (8-8400)
whenever working alone.
WANT TO HELP WITH EVACUATIONS
AND/OR EMERGENCY PLANNING?
Additional help is always in need in times of crisis, and
also during emergency preparedness planning.
 Help is needed:
–
–

With clearing buildings of occupants
Assisting the mobility impaired with evacuating using
LifeSliders (LifeSlider training provided to rescuers)
If you are interested in becoming involved, please
contact your department safety coordinator and/or
EH&S.
