PWRDF do?
What does ‘Food Security’ mean?
The World Food Summit of
1996 defined food security as
existing “when all people at all
times have access to
sufficient, safe, nutritious food
to maintain a healthy and
active life.”
How do we measure Food Security?
THREE PILLARS OF FOOD
SECURITY:

FOOD AVAILABILITY


FOOD ACCESS


sufficient and consistent quantities of food
sufficient resources to obtain appropriate foods
for a nutritious diet
FOOD USE

education of basic nutrition and care, as well as
adequate water and sanitation
Food Security VS Food Aid
Food Security

consumption and production

Giving hungry people something
to eat immediately

Short term solution to a long
term problem
PWRDF & TANZANIA
Seeds for the Future
55 farmers will raise crops and
provide 20% of their crops to the
program that will provide seeds to
others to start a farming movement
within the community.
Not only will the pass along of seeds
see a large number of farmers
reaping the rewards but will also
feed into the program. Those new
farmers will provide 20% to keep the
cycle going. By the end of a five year
cycle over 90 000 farmers will have
benefited!

“In a world of plenty, no one, not a single
person, should go hungry. But almost
1 billion still do not have enough food to
eat. I want to see an end to hunger
everywhere within my life time.”
Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General
