Important Verbs
Important Verbs
• The most important French verbs
– avoir (to have), être (to be), and faire (to
do/make)
• They are used in some of the ways that we use
them in English as well as in many
expressions. Conjugations for all three of
these verbs are irregular:
Avoir - to have

1. J'ai un livre.
I have a book.
2. Nous avons une voiture.
We have a car.
3. They have two children.
Ils ont deux enfants.
Être - to be

• Je suis à Paris.
I am in Paris.
• Nous sommes très contents.
We are very happy.
• Vous êtes des étudiants.

Faire - to do, make

Examples
1. Je fais mon lit.
I'm making my bed.
2. Nous faisons tout ensemble.
We do everything together.
3. Ils font leur devoir.
They are doing their
homework.
Note
• Even though être is the French equivalent of
"to be," there are certain expressions in
which you have to use avoir or faire to
translate "to be.”
– J’ai 18ans.
I’m 18 year old.
