Our Mission
 Provide a diverse and collaborative statewide forum for addressing
issues of concern in coastal oceanographic research and education;
 Leverage and integrate existing physical and intellectual resources
within the State University System (SUS) and throughout Florida;
 Anticipate and plan for future infrastructure needs;
 Facilitate, promote and support collaborative ocean-related research
and education statewide; and
 Develop and strengthen networks that enable timely identification of
oceanographic research opportunities and distribution of research
results and other information to the general public, natural resource
management agencies and local, state and national policymakers.

In July 2012, FIO’s work regarding the Deepwater
Horizon oil spill was recognized by Congress, naming
FIO as a “center of excellence” and “the centralized
voice of the ocean science in Florida.”

Use of Endowment:
 Establish a program focused on human health and environmental
protection including issues relating to offshore oil drilling and hydrocarbon
production and transportation in the Gulf of Mexico and on the US outer
continental shelf.
Carry out studies, projects, and other activities that use the scientific,
technical, engineering, medical, and health expertise of the NAS, NAE,
IOM, NRC, and the nation’s scientific, engineering, and health-care
communities.
The activities will be:
 determined solely by NAS
 selected based on scientific merit and integrity, with emphasis on
freedom of inquiry and independent nonpartisan advice
NAS shall work in cooperation and coordination with industry,
universities, research institutions, State governments, and other
nations, as appropriate
