An Innovative Interfaces library with Table of
Contents (TOC) data, planning to do an
authorities processing backfile project
No additional cost to include 970 $f
All names will be in sync—names in Table of
Contents (TOC) and names in 100, 700, etc.
Processing only names in TOC would produce
inconsistencies.
Required Database Characteristics
• Formatted Table of Contents in MARC tag 970,
rather than 505. Primarily III systems.
• Name in inverted order present in 970, subfield $f
– Direct order in 970 $c is standard
– Inverted order in 970 $f is available from some
sources
• Author/Name index includes names from 970 $f.
Sources of TOC Data in 970 Fields
III libraries enrich their monographic MARC
records by sending or obtaining MARC records
from a company that adds the data to 505 or 970.
For example:
• Table of Contents Service from Blackwell, a Baker
& Taylor company.
• MARC Record Enrichment Service (TOC) from
MARCIVE, Inc.
Internal MARCIVE Processing
• Names in 970 $f are copied to special process tags.
• Authorities processing is performed according to
library specifications.
• Name headings are updated to current form.
• Appropriate authority records are identified.
• Inappropriate subfielding is removed.
• Updated names replace old names. If name could
not be updated, existing name remains.
• Special process tags are removed.
Result: Better Search Results
• Consistency in Authors/Names Index. Both
standard access points (X00) and TOC names (970
$f) have been upgraded and the results re-indexed.
• Consistency maintained. Notification Service
tracks changes and provides corrections to all
authorities, including those provided as a result of
970 $f processing.
• Future names integrated. New bibliographic
records sent through Overnight Authorities are
upgraded, including 970 $f fields.
