The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)
May, 2009
 IITs are the premier group of 7
engineering and technology
institutes established as Institutes of
National Importance by the
Government of India
 8 new IITs have recently been
established
 Each IIT is an autonomous university,
linked to the others through a
common IIT Council, which oversees
their administration.
 About 15,500 bachelors and 12,000
masters students study in the 7 IITs,
in addition to research scholars

IIT Kanpur
Mission and Strategy
May, 2009
Mission
The Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur has a mission to achieve a high level of
excellence in research as well as post-graduate education without sacrificing the leading
position established by the institute in the field of undergraduate education.
Strategy
1.
The institute commits to transform the complexion of the postgraduate education by enhancing
research and presentation events by continuous funding through increased assistantships or
research funding.
2.
The institute commits to improve the undergraduate education by making the curriculum for the
students more flexible and research oriented so that they are able to feel motivated to acquire
skills, learn principles and imbibe a spirit of innovation.
3.
The institute recognizes the sponsored research activity as an important and integral part of the
academic activity. The focus areas for this program are classified as energy, materials, sensors,
manufacturing, communication, computing and disaster mitigation.
4.
IIT-Kanpur during its evolution process from a UG-centric vision to a broader vision of research
and education, it is necessary to consider the reorganization of different departments and
clubbing departments into schools.
5.
IIT-Kanpur wishes to make its students N-dimensional. This includes bringing in new activities
which would bring diversity in the already existing curriculum and extra curricular activities.

2009-2011 Goals / Actions
May, 2009
Incentivize students and provide hands on exposure / awareness to choose
Aerospace Engineering as a career goal through:

Scholarships based on Student design project/ Autonomous Vehicle Project
initiated.

Technical event / information session sponsorship (Techkriti Funding done for
2009-10 and 2010-11)

Boeing Externship program
(2009-10: 6 positions; 3 at Infotech Hyderabad and 3 at TCS Chennai)
(2010-11: 6 Positions; All 6 at Infotech Hyderabad)
 Post Graduate Research Funding (2010-2011: Peristaltic Micropumps)

Body Engineering Phase 1
May, 2009
Structure Evolution
3 Stage packaging
Good stability
Turn in minimum space
Basic Tracked structure
Space problem
Improved Light Tracks and
structure
Compact and light weight
Front flippers ensured better
performance in rough terrains
Aesthetics improved
Body Engineering Phase 2
May, 2009
6 wheeled drive with 2 DOF in
each wheel
Advantages
Robust Suspension system
capable of very rough terrains
Reasons for
structure change
1)Power
consumption
2)Vibration
3)Speed
Problem
Incapable of handling Abhyast
weight requirements
Off the shelf Wild
Thumper chassis
Current Status
1) Simple 4
wheeled layered
structure
2) Vibration and
Power problems
solved
3) Aesthetics to be
improved
ELECTRONICS
May, 2009
Hand Soldered Circuit Boards were replaced by
much durable and reliable Printed Circuit
Boards (PCBS)
•No hanging wires
•Aesthetically good
•No loose connections

Abhyast Navigation
May, 2009
Phase 1
Obstacle avoidance with the help of Laser scanner
GPS Navigation-GPS navigation tested
independently
IMU GPS integration tried to achieve self
localization
Major Problem-Compass unreliable due to high
vibration
Low cost IMU suffering with high noise
Phase 2 Navigation Improvements
Obstacle avoidance with directional navigation
Improved time-complexity
Major algorithm improvements to achieve
reliable real time navigation
SWARM Robots and
Intercommunication
May, 2009
Aim- To develop simple robots(Slave Robots) which
can interact with Abhyast(Master) and carry out gas
detection
Based on the philosophy that desired collectively behaviour
emerges from the interactions between the robots and
interaction of robots with the environment

Intercommunication, Slave localization and
Gas detection achieved
