Homework Without
Tears
A parent’s guide to successfully
helping your child complete their
homework stress-free!
Consistency is a KEY!
Just as your child is comfortable and knows
where/when work will be completed at school,
you need to create the same environment at
home.
Establish a place where your child will always
complete homework.
All homework materials should be kept at this location.
Establish a time when your child will always complete
their homework.
Allow your child Choices!
Give your child choices to allow the child to take
ownership of the homework.
Let the child choose the place and time homework
will be completed each day.
Review all your child’s assignments with them and
let them make their own schedule as to the order
the assignments will be completed.
Allow your child to take one five minute break at
their own discretion during homework sessions.
Motivation/Incentives
Developing Incentive Systems:
Decide the problem behaviors
Forgetting materials for homework?
Not writing down assignments?
Rushing while completing work?
Complaining during the homework routine?
Set goals
Create a homework contract with your child
The contract should include the rewards/penalties for homework
procedures.
Monitor Progress and Follow Through with rewards/penalties
Stay consistent and keep track of the behaviors using a device
such as a sticker chart.
Use TECHNOLOGY for
help!
GRADES K-5
For mathematics, we use the Everyday
Mathematics Series.
For ILA, we use the Harcourt Storytown
Series.
Both series have many sites to reinforce
various concepts.
On the next page, view some websites to help
your child at home.
Math Online~
Go to www.barnegatschools.com
Choose the curriculum tab; click on curriculum programs
On the left side of the site, you will choose Mathematics, then
choose Elementary Math
There are MANY sites to play games and instill the topics that
are needed per grade level.
Please view the everyday mathematics sites
Also, be sure to review the Family letters that contain an overview
of what your child is learning per unit and tips/answer keys for the
homework links
It is vital that your child knows his or her facts. The fact calendars
per grade level focus on these skills.
ILA Online~
Go to www.barnegatschools.com
Choose the curriculum tab; click on curriculum programs
On the left side of the screen, choose Integrated Language
Arts
Here, you will find various sites that will enhance your child’s
reading and writing.
Be sure to check out the 6+1 Writing Traits so you can relate to the
21st century “lingo” your child is discussing.
~Study Island~
Study Island is a way for your child to learn, practice,
and test many skills in Math, Reading, and Writing.
This is a site to improve testing abilities and scores.

Open-Communication
Talk to your child daily about their homework and
their strengths/weaknesses in the lesson.
Know what your child’s needs are and be sure the
child and teacher are well aware of them.
Always alert your child’s teacher if your child
shows stress or confusion over a topic.
Never make your child show aggression over a topic in
which he or she cannot successfully complete. More
instruction/reinforcement may be needed.
