Access to Communication and
Technology
• www.bhamcommunity.nhs.uk/act
This is only for Today
• The world of Apple is continually changing,
what I tell you today may have already
changed,
• For this presentation I opened a a previously
working iTunes and it would not work, I had to
download the latest version
• This is just how I have found to make it work,
there may be other / better ways
Access to Communication and
Technology
• 6 x iPads v1 to 3
• 3 x iPod Touch
• 5 x user own device
Before setting out to get an iPad
• What are you going to use it for
–
–
–
–
Demonstration only
Single user
Multiple user
Clone – Beware of copyright infringement
• Paying for Apps
– Credit card
– Educational discounts for bulk purchases
– iTunes vouchers
Decisions to be made
• How many things on an Apple ID, 10 devices,
that is iDevices and computers combined
• http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4627
• PC synchronisation has advantages, and
disadvantages
– Will take a copy of the iDevice on connection
– Allows cloning of more than one device
WARNING – copyright issues
– Can manage authorised PCs via iTunes account
– Makes a copyable backup at
C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
iPad 101

First time out of the box requirements
Have a way of recording what you are setting
up, logins, passwords, recovery details
Decided what you are going to call your
iDevice
Have set up an email account or decide to
use iCloud email
Have set up an iTunes account – need a
credit card for this
iPad 101 Continued
• Decide how you will configure it, using
WiFi or via a PC (Windows or Mac),
partly dependant on how you will
backup the device and the Apps you will
be using
• Switch it on and follow the on screen
instructions
iPad 101 Continued
• Process will set, among others,
– Language
– Country
– Device name
– Allow set up iCloud account
Once it is configured
• ACT set restrictions to access on the iDevices
–
–
–
–
Cannot delete Apps
Cannot buy / load more Apps
WiFi is off
Bluetooth is off unless using Bluetooth switches
• Keep the email account live, ACT have 8
Gmail accounts and once a month, send
them all, from each other, an email
Setting up an iTunes account
• Download iTunes from the apple
website, may have to get dispensation
from IT controllers for access to iTunes
• Before you start, have somewhere to
record what you are doing
• Verify the account, log into the iTunes
account,
• Go to Accounts, edit credit card details
• Select None
• Save changes and exit accounts
Managing the iTunes Account
• Manage the account

Buying Apps
• Search for what you want
• Make sure you choose the correct
version, iPhone (iPod Touch) or iPad
Keeping Records / Management
ACT use a Microsoft Access database
User Friendly Interface to Db
Backing up
• This depends on the App, some allow
synchronisation with a PC (Proloquo2Go)
• GridPlayer accesses Smartbox’s own cloud
server
• iCloud – has to start from an iDevice, enable
with an Apple ID, can get an email address at
icloud.com. enables backup of music, Apps,
and photos on a daily basis via WiFi. Can
access the account from a PC (Win or Mac).
Proloquo2Go Backup
User’s own Device
• User’s own iDevice, adding Apps.
– User may have changed email address since
setting up iTunes account
• User changes educational establishment
– Better to use none aligned Apple ID so it will
transfer to new setting, change the password
• Accept that user own iDevice Apps will be lost
if user dies or changes App
– App could be used on another device if PC
synchronised but cannot update without
credentials (Apple ID + password)
Copyright and Cloning
• There are no problems with free Apps
• Paid for Apps should only be used on one
iDevice
• Although it is possible to clone a device, this
will infringe copyright if paid for Apps are
shared unless you have a site licence
• ACT policy, one device, one iTunes account
Limitations of iTunes accounts

On a Cheery Note
• If all else fails – factory reset
