November AAC SIG Living with iPads 19.11.2013 Mike Ryan Clinical Scientist Access to Communication and Technology Access to Communication and Technology • www.bhamcommunity.nhs.uk/act This is only for Today • The world of Apple is continually changing, what I tell you today may have already changed, • For this presentation I opened a a previously working iTunes and it would not work, I had to download the latest version • This is just how I have found to make it work, there may be other / better ways Access to Communication and Technology • 6 x iPads v1 to 3 • 3 x iPod Touch • 5 x user own device Before setting out to get an iPad • What are you going to use it for – – – – Demonstration only Single user Multiple user Clone – Beware of copyright infringement • Paying for Apps – Credit card – Educational discounts for bulk purchases – iTunes vouchers Decisions to be made • How many things on an Apple ID, 10 devices, that is iDevices and computers combined • http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4627 • PC synchronisation has advantages, and disadvantages – Will take a copy of the iDevice on connection – Allows cloning of more than one device WARNING – copyright issues – Can manage authorised PCs via iTunes account – Makes a copyable backup at C:\My Documents\My Music\iTunes iPad 101 • • • • First time out of the box requirements Have a way of recording what you are setting up, logins, passwords, recovery details Decided what you are going to call your iDevice Have set up an email account or decide to use iCloud email Have set up an iTunes account – need a credit card for this iPad 101 Continued • Decide how you will configure it, using WiFi or via a PC (Windows or Mac), partly dependant on how you will backup the device and the Apps you will be using • Switch it on and follow the on screen instructions iPad 101 Continued • Process will set, among others, – Language – Country – Device name – Allow set up iCloud account Once it is configured • ACT set restrictions to access on the iDevices – – – – Cannot delete Apps Cannot buy / load more Apps WiFi is off Bluetooth is off unless using Bluetooth switches • Keep the email account live, ACT have 8 Gmail accounts and once a month, send them all, from each other, an email Setting up an iTunes account • Download iTunes from the apple website, may have to get dispensation from IT controllers for access to iTunes • Before you start, have somewhere to record what you are doing • Verify the account, log into the iTunes account, • Go to Accounts, edit credit card details • Select None • Save changes and exit accounts Managing the iTunes Account • Manage the account – – – – – Name and Email address Password and Security Addresses Phone numbers Language and Contact preferences https://appleid.apple.com/cgibin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/wa/directToSignI n?localang=en_uk Buying Apps • Search for what you want • Make sure you choose the correct version, iPhone (iPod Touch) or iPad Keeping Records / Management ACT use a Microsoft Access database User Friendly Interface to Db Backing up • This depends on the App, some allow synchronisation with a PC (Proloquo2Go) • GridPlayer accesses Smartbox’s own cloud server • iCloud – has to start from an iDevice, enable with an Apple ID, can get an email address at icloud.com. enables backup of music, Apps, and photos on a daily basis via WiFi. Can access the account from a PC (Win or Mac).
