Who We Are
The first President of the American Red Cross was
Clara Barton, who had served as a nurse during the
U.S. Civil War.
Having petitioned Congress for better access to the
battlefields to treat the wounded, and traveling
between battles, she had knowledge of troop
movements around the Country.
With this information, when the war had ended, Clara
Barton was tasked by President Lincoln to manage the
search for missing soldiers and prisoners of war.
Who We Are
Afterward, Clara Barton travelled to Europe, where she
met with members of the International Red Cross, with
whom she remained in contact after her return to the
United States.
In 1881, after being petitioned by Clara Barton on
behalf of the International Red Cross, President
Chester A. Arthur signed the Geneva conventions.
Thus, the American Red Cross was born, receiving an
official Congressional charter, recognizing it as an
independent partner of the United States government.

DISASTER SERVICES
When a family loses their home as the result
of a fire or natural disaster, the Red Cross
responds by providing that family with
assistance for food, clothing, temporary
lodging and information on other community
resources to help them through a tough
time, while they get back on their feet.

• We have 278 registered volunteers
• We have helped 426 people in 146 families
• Multiple volunteers have helped other
Chapters with a disaster

SERVICES TO ARMED FORCES
When a member of our armed services is
deployed and has a family emergency at home,
your American Red Cross connects that service
member with their family, and coordinates
information with the armed services, so that
military family can get the support they need. We
also follow up with the family to assure that they
have information on various service agencies in
their community, whose help they may require.
