TECNALIA has a patent portfolio comprising 114 families
that cover many different technological areas. This
portfolio is constantly evolving and it is dynamically
managed according to the business divisions’ technology
strategy. TECNALIA currently has 286 active patents of
which 52 were requested last year.
The most remarkable activities in the technology transfer
field are those related with entrepreneurship and
negotiation of license agreements: Throughout its history,
TECNALIA has promoted the creation of numerous New
Technology-Based Firms, of which 25 are still operating
and employ 132 people. Nowadays, TECNALIA is still
stakeholder in 17 of these NTBCs. On the other hand,
TECNALIA has promoted the knowledge transfer to the
industrial sector through the establishment of licensing
agreements with companies both nationally and
These are the 4 approaches to the way TECNALIA
works with companies:
STRATEGIES: TECNALIA provides strategic vision
to help companies reinforce their competitiveness.
creates technological assets ready to generate
business in the market.
3.R&D PROJECTS: TECNALIA develops projects
with a clear focus towards market and the generation
of value for our clients by new partnership models.
provides technological services for the evaluation and
diagnosis of materials, processes and products in
order to guarantee its reliability, security and
Last year, ITI was involved in 98 R&D projects, in which 77%, ITI
was hired directly by companies, and the remaining 23% have
been achieved through funding public (89% in cooperation with
other technology centres and / or companies). In addition to R&D
itself, ITI was executing projects in strategic areas funded
exclusively by the Institute. These data were the result of ITI
transferring efforts, enterprise demand-oriented, dissemination
sessions, workshops organized for identifying needs and
exchange of experiences, betting on a renewed innovation
management based on technological surveillance, an enhanced
process of opportunities detection, a better strategy for
internationalization, ... in order to get closer to businesses, with
more and better information about their environment, allowing
companies to make appropriate decisions aligned with the trends.
Finally, ITI got several registration of copyright of ITI various
proprietary technologies as well as the claim of two patent
registers, one in USA and one in various countries across the
PCT area.
The offer provided by the ITI technology consists of both
Technology Services and Technology Products. Services
include architecture and software development
(Implementation and deployment of applications,
architectures and design, development and development
consulting, development methodologies, development of
information management tools), Mobile Applications and
"Smart environments" (Mobility and Ambient Intelligence) and
software Quality and testing (software testing, usability and
accessibility, verification and validation of critical systems
software). Regarding Technology Products ITI offers
ForePlanner (management system for demand forecasting),
SeKuen (tool capable of optimize production scheduling in
complex environments), RoutingMaps (system for routes and
fleets optimization) , OCRFORMS (OCR / ICR (Optical /
Intelligent Character Recognition) able to recognize, extract
and export printed and handwritten information from different
types of documents for subsequent digital processing),
ITICAB (technology Identification / Verification by face
recognition) and ZeroGravity3D (visual inspection system for
quality control). For more information visit
The strategy adopted by CITIC consists in acting as a
link between the knowledge of the university and the
necessities of society and industry. This enables CITIC to
realize R&D projects, transfer developed technology and
favor the implantation into society through the
Technology Transfer Office (TTO). CITIC has a strong
experience in national and european R&D projects (more
than hundred developed projects), as a result, its
researchers have acquired much expertise in several
research lines. Also, some enterprises and public entities
have trusted in CITIC by hiring its services for the
development of specific tailored solutions for their daily
operations and management.
CITIC have developed specific R&D solutions, in the
following fields:
eHealth: Telemedicine and teleassistance,
Smart environments for support to and monitoring of
people in need of assistance, Patient monitoring, etc.
Free SoftWare: Technical audits specialized in
the application of free software for all types of
corporate solutions, Adaptation of free software tools
to the needs of the clients, etc.
Communications: Mobile communications for
vehicular networks (VANET: Vehicular Ad-Hoc
Network), Interoperability of wireless mobile
technologies, etc.
Information Systems, security and trust:
System for detecting and authenticating people using
biometric data. Fingerprint authentication, etc.
