Why Off-Rink Conditioning?

Cost of rink time
 Time and commitment constraints
 Is training for strength, speed, power,
endurance, and flexibility your focus of
team on-rink training sessions?
Importance

Game is faster than ever before
 Players are bigger, stronger, and faster
 Chance of injury increases
 You are at a serious disadvantage without
improvements in strength, speed, flexibility,
and endurance
Goals:

Reach full potential
 Team bonding
 Discipline
 Mental toughness
 Sense of achievement
 Overall health and well being
Approach

Multi-lateral development
– “the development of a variety of fundamental skills to
help in becoming good general athletes before training
in a specific sport.”

Periodization
– “is the process of varying a training program at regular
time intervals to bring about optimal gains in physical
performance.”

Young Adults and Elite Athletes
 Focus
– To Compete and excel at the elite level of competition
– Have a competitive advantage in size, speed, strength,
power, etc.
– Train specific to areas that will translate to the sport
– A strategic and scientific process affecting the athlete in
many areas of their life (physical training, nutrition,
sleep schedules, mental training and preparation,
personal life sacrifices)
Format, Example of a workout

Warm-up:
– often overlooked
– avoid injury and perform at the highest level possible
– Dynamic activity followed by stretching

The Workout

Cool Down:
– similar to the warm-up
– helps flush the body of lactic acid and toxins produced
by the muscles during the workout
– long, slow stretching to recover the muscles and
improve flexibility
