Background
• ECOWAS the 15 Member States have determined
that the provision of affordable electricity supply
to consumers and industry can more easily be
achieved by interconnecting the electricity
networks of countries in the region
• To this end, the West African Power Pool (WAPP)
was established in 1999
• The Bolgatanga (Ghana) – Ouagadougou (Burkina
Faso) electricity interconnection is one of WAPPs
priority interconnection projects.
• WAPP Secretariat, on behalf of the VRA of Ghana
and SONABEL of Burkina Faso, is coordinating the
implementation of the 225 kV Bolgatanga (Ghana)
– Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) interconnection
project to permit the exportation of cheaper
power to Burkina Faso from Ghana

Preparatory
Activities
• update the feasibility study and carry out detailed
engineering designs
• conduct a preliminary Line route survey for 225 kV
transmission interconnection project
• conduct an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment
• prepare Tender Documents for the procurement and
installation of the transmission line and related substations
under the project.
• Burkina Faso to have an alternative and diversified source of
energy supply through imports
• providing Ghana the opportunity to export excess capacit
Objectives
• additional link for the WAPP transmission system advancing
their goal of an interconnected network in the ECOWAS
region, which ultimately could result into a fully fledged
electricity market.
