While records exist of red wines from Montalcino made in the 14th century, it is only in the late
20th century that Brunello has been recognized as one of the world’s great wines. At the end of
World War II there was only one commercial producer. When Brunello was given DOC
(Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status in 1968 there were only 11 producers. In 1980
Brunello was the first Italian wine granted DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e
Garantita) status and had 53 producers. That number increased to 200 producers by the
beginning of the 21st century. Today 7 million bottles of Brunello and 3 million of Rosso di
Montalcino are produced each year. And Brunello is recognized as one of the great red wines of
the world.
2006 and 2007 were both recognized as excellent vintages for Brunello, although quite different
in weather and resulting wines. 2006 was characterized by a growing season with hot days but
cool nights, resulting in wines with good structure and acidity and, hence, excellent ageing
potential, while 2007 was characterized by a mild winter, warm and dry summer, and very early
harvest, producing wines with exceptional fruit and early accessibility. Join us and savor the
variability in one of the world’s great red wines.
