Abstract.
Fluidized bed converters display a long record of success stories as environments where
harsh thermochemical conversion processes may be conveniently carried out, like those implying
pronounced thermicity and/or problematic interphase mass and heat transfer. Despite widespread
diffusion of fluidized bed converters, there are still many open fundamental, design and operational
issues related to segregation and mixing of solid and gas phases in fluidized beds and effectiveness of
multiphase contacting patterns. The common claim of fluidized beds being well stirred/well controlled
environments for heterogeneous and gas-phase reactions falls short in some cases, as when fluidized
beds are applied to thermochemical conversion of high-volatile solid fuels. The lecture aims at
presenting selected illustrations of fundamental phenomena affecting mixing/segregation of phases in
fluidized beds, their relevance to thermochemical processing of solids and to proper control of
heterogeneous and gas-phase reaction pathways, the rationale of measures to counteract segregation
phenomena.
