A WOMAN OF FAITH
After a snow storm had piled up huge drifts. A man came out to shovel his driveway. His
neighbor said to him: “You’ve got a big job ahead of you! How are you going to clear all the
snow by yourself?” The man answered: “By keeping at it!”
In today’s Gospel passage we heard about a woman who won a great blessing from Jesus
by “keeping at it.” She would not take no for an answer. And she was a Canaanite, a pagan and
idol worshiper. Jews regarded such people as religiously unclean and disdainfully referred to
them as dogs. The woman’s worst fears proved only true. When she appealed to Jesus, He
remained silent. But she kept at it until she got His attention and in the end she gained the
healing of her daughter.
“Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David!” the woman cried out. Whatever her
background, the woman came to Jesus with strong faith. She publicly named Him Lord and King
from the royal lineage of David. In other words, she acknowledged Him as the awaited Messiah
or “Christos,” which means the One anointed and sealed by God to carry out God’s work of
salvation. Her appeal was a form of urgent prayer, asking for the healing of her daughter. She
called out invoking and trusting in the Messiah’s mercy—ελέησον/έλεος—terms that have rich
meaning in the Bible. The Hebrew word is hesed, meaning “steadfast love,” “tender mercy,” or
“covenant love.” All these words refer to God’s irrevocable loving commitment to guide and lead
His people to salvation no matter their weaknesses and failings. In our own prayers and appeals
to Christ, we count on the same abiding love of God. We call out in prayer trusting not in our
own merits but in God’s love and faithfulness.
Jesus tested the woman’s faith severely. At first He ignored her calls and was silent. Even
the disciples got a little nervous and asked Him to do something to stop her from pestering
them. But Jesus replied that His mission was only for the Jewish people. In fact, His earthly
ministry was to the Jews with only a few exceptional meetings with Gentiles such as with the
Samaritan woman, the Roman centurion, and this Canaanite woman. Jesus never refused any
one. Later He expanded His mission to all peoples through His disciples. After His resurrection,
He charged the disciples: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them … [and]
teaching them all that I have commanded you. And behold I am with you always to the close of
the ages” (Mat 28:19-20).
The Canaanite woman knelt before Him and insisted: “Lord, help me!” Jesus responded
with what might have been a crushing remark. He said it was not right to cast the children’s
bread to dogs! The woman might have left angry and cursing. Instead she humbly replied she
would be satisfied with the crumbs: “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from
their masters’ table!” Amazed at the woman’s persistent and humble faith, Jesus cried out: “O
woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire!” Her daughter was cured in that
instant.
Everyone’s faith is tested in the journey of life. We are not exempt from trials that may bring
us to a breaking point, testing our faith in other people, sometimes in the Church herself, and
even in God. These are “Gethsemane moments,” such as when Christ prayed three times:
“Father, may this cup pass away from me!” Yet Christ remained faithful to the end. May our own
faith too endure and pass through such moments of pain and distress, counting not on our own
strength but on God’s strength, faithfulness and love. Nothing is more right and helpful than faith
that, in all circumstances, our life and destiny are in the hand of a loving and merciful God.
Ω ΓΥΝΑΙ ΜΑΓΑΛΗ ΣΟΥ Η ΠΙΣΤΙΣ!
Μετά από µιά χιονοθύελλα, κάποιος σπιτονοικοκύρης βγήκε έξω µε το φτυάρι και άρχισε να
ξεχιονίζει. Ο γείτονάς του τον είδε και είπε, «Έχεις πολλή δουλειά µπροστάς σου. Πως θα τα
καταφέρεις µόνος σου;» Και αυτός απάντησε, «Με υποµονή!»
Το σηµερινό ευαγγέλιο διηγείται το παράδειγµα κάποιας γυναίκας η οποία έλαβε µιά µεγάλη
δωρεά από τον Χριστό γιά την υποµονή της πίστεώς της. Και ήτο Χαναναία, δηλαδή, ξένη και
ειδωλολάτρεισσα. Οι Εβραίοι εθεωρούσαν τέτοιους ανθρώπους ακάρθατους και τους καλούσαν
σκυλιά. Γιά αρκετό χρόνο ο Χριστός αγνόησε το αίτηµά της. Αυτή όµως επέµενε έως ότου
εκέρδισε την προσοχή Του και στο τέλος έλαβε την θεραπεία της κόρης της όπως ήθελε.
«Ελέησόν µε, Κύριε, Υιέ Δαβίδ,» εφώναξε η γυναίκα. Παρά την καταγωγή της, η κυρία αυτή
επλησίασε τον Χριστό µε δυνατή πίστη. Τον ωνόµασε Κύριο και Βασιλιά εκ του γένους Δαβίδ.
Δηλαδή, ωµολόγησε ότι ήτο ο αναµενόµενος Μεσσίας ή «Χριστός,» πού εννοεί χρισµένος νά
επιτελέσει το σωτήριο έργο του Θεού. Το αίτηµά της ήταν σαν επείγουσα προσευχή γιά τη
θεραπεία της κόρης της. Επίστευσε και επεκλήθη το έλεος του Χριστού. Η λέξη έλεος έχει
βαρυσήµαντο νόηµα στην Αγία Γραφή. Εννοεί την αµετάκλητο αγάπη και αφοσίωση του Θεού
στο λαό Του, το θεµέλιο της διαθήκης που ο Θεός είχε συνάψει µε το λαό Του, παρά τις
αδυναµίες και παραπτώµατα του λαού. Οι δικοί µαν προσευχές και επικλήσεις στον Χριστό
έχουν το ίδιο θεµέλιο της αγάπης και πιστότητας του Θεού γιά µας.
Ο Χριστός εδοκίµασε τήν πίστη της Χαναναίας µε σκληρό τρόπο. Πρώτα αγνόησε το αίτηµά
της. Οι µαθηταί Του παρεκάλεσαν να κάµει κάτι γι’ αυτήν, να µην τους ενοχλεί. Ο Χριστός τους
απάντησε ότι η αποστολή Του ήταν γιά τους Εβραίους µόνον. Πράγµατι, η επί γης διακονία Του
ήταν γιά τους Εβραίους, µε ολίγες εξαιρέσεις, όπως στις περιπτώσεις της Σαµαρείτιδας, του
Ρωµαίου Εκατοντάρχου και της ενταύθα Χαναναίας. Ο Χριστός απέκρουσε ουδένα ερχόµενο
προς Αυτόν. Αλλά αργότερα επέκτεινε το έργο Του εις όλο τόν κόσµο µέσω των µαθητών Του.
Εδήλωσε στους µαθητάς, «Πορευθέντες, µαθητεύσατε πάντα τα έθνη, βαπτίζοντες ... καί
διδάσκοντες αυτούς πάντα όσα ενετειλάµην υµίν. Και εγώ µεθ’ υµών ειµί έως της συντελείας του
αιώνος» (Ματθαίου 28,19-20).
Η Χαναναία επέµενε. Εγονάτισε µπροστά Του, Τον προσκύνησε, λέγοντας, «Κύριε, βοήθει
µοι!» Ο Χριστός απάντησε µε βαρύ λόγο ότι δεν ήταν σωστό να ρίχνεται το ψωµί των παιδιών
στα σκυλιά. Τέτοιος λόγος θα µπορούσε να αποκρούσει τη Χαναναία µε αποτέλεσµα να φύγει
οργισµένη και βλασφηµούσα. Αντίθετα όµως, απάντησε µε ταπεινόφρονα και έξυπνα λόγια,
«Ναι Κύριε, και γαρ τα κυνάρια εσθίει από των ψιχίων των πιπτόντων από της τραπέζης των
κυρίων αυτών.» Εθαύµασε ο Χριστός την επίµονο πίστη της και έκραξε, «Ω γύναι, µεγάλη σου η
πίστης. Γενηθήτω σοι ως θέλεις.» Η κόρη της εθεραπεύθη αυτοστιγµεί.
Η πίστη καθ΄ ενός δοκιµάζεται κάποτε στη ζωή. Δεν εξαιρείται κανείς από δεινά που
µπορούν να διασπάσουν δεσµούς µε συνανθρώπους µας, και µε την Εκκλησία µερικές φορές,
και ακόµη µε το Θεό. Τέτοιες εµπειρίες είναι ώρες της Γεθσηµανή όπου και ο Χριστός
γονατισµένος προσευχήθηκε, «Πάτερ, παρελθέτω το ποτήριον τούτο απ’ εµού.» Αλλ’ όµως ο
Χριστός παρέµεινε πιστός µέχρι τέλους. Είθε και η δική µας πίστη να παραµείνει ασάλευτη σε
στιγµές πόνου και ταλαιπωρίας, µε θεµέλιο όχι τις δικές µας δυνάµεις αλλα την δύναµη και
πιστότητα του Θεού. Τίποτα δεν είναι πειό σωστό και βοηθητικό όσο η πίστη ότι, σε όλες τίς
περιστάσεις, η ζωή και ο προορισµός µας είναι στά χέρια του φιλανθρώπου και πιστού Θεού.
