De onrust in Ethiopië beheerst Knipselkrant 11. De aanvallen op buitenlandse bedrijven zijn doorgegaan. De regering zoekt naar wegen om ze voor de geleden schade te compenseren. Op het Irechafestival in Bishoftu vielen ruim vijftig doden, reden voor het Ethiopische parlement om drie dagen van nationale rouw uit te roepen en voor de regering om de noodtoestand af te kondigen. Sindsdien zijn ruim 2.500 mensen gearresteerd. Naast een beperking van het gebruik van Social Media, een demonstratieverbod en betere beveiliging van buitenlandse bedrijven is de bewegingsvrijheid van diplomaten aan banden gelegd. De gevolgen van de onrust worden steeds voelbaarder. De Nederlandse ambassade heeft een crisisteam ingesteld. Washington adviseert niet-essentiële reizen uit te stellen. Op bezoek in Addis Abeba pleitte bondskanselier Angela Merkel voor meer openheid in de Ethiopische politiek. Ethiopië beschuldigt Egypte, Human Rights Watch en de diaspora van steun aan de oppositie en verdraaiing van de werkelijkheid. Een Keniaanse krant bericht, dat Ethiopië zijn troepen aan het terugtrekken is uit Somalië, omdat het die nodig heeft aan het thuisfront en dat Al Shabaab daardoor al weer terrein wint. Bij de protesten is de eerste buitenlander omgekomen. Onder degenen die het land verlaten is de populaire soap-acteur Zenah-Bezu Tsegaye. Ethiopië kondigt noodtoestand af na antiregeringsprotesten

Minister-president Hailemariam: ‘Dit is nodig omdat de huidige situatie een grote dreiging is voor de bevolking’. Bevolkingsgroepen voelen zich achtergesteld. Demonstranten bestormen overheidsbedrijven. Ook enkele Nederlandse bedrijven zijn aangevallen. Volgens de regering zijn de aanvallen niet specifiek gericht tegen de Nederlandse bedrijven, maar worden die gezien als verlengstuk van de Ethiopische overheid. Op de Nederlandse ambassade is een crisisteam gevormd. Dat staat in voortdurend contact met Nederlandse ondernemingen en de Ethiopische overheid. Ethiopië wil aangevallen bloembedrijven compenseren

Vier Nederlandse ondernemingen bij Bahir Dar, die eerder deze maand schade opliepen en waarvan er een – met vijfhonderd werknemers zelfs stopt, krijgen misschien schadevergoeding. Ethiopian troops pull out of Somalia towns

The Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation reports that hundreds of Ethiopian troops pulled out of El-Ali, a town in the Hiran region in central Somalia Tuesday. It is the second location vacated by their forces in recent weeks, a Somali security official said. Nearby Shabaab militants then reoccupied El-Ali, which lies about 70 kilometres (43 miles) from the provincial capital Beledweyne. No reason was given for the Ethiopian pull-out. US woman dies in Ethiopia van attack

A van travelling on Addis Ababa's outskirts was hit by stones ‘thrown by unknown individuals’, the US embassy in the capital said. A woman passenger, Sharon Gray, was struck by a stone and died later from her injuries. She was an agricultural expert working in the troubled Oromia region. Ethiopia to overtake Kenya as Eastern Africa's top economy

Ethiopia's economy is expected to overtake Kenya's this year, buoyed by massive government spending on infrastructure. Chinese-built railroad to the sea

The standard-gauge rail line stretches 600 km from Addis Ababa, to the port of Djibouti and will handle 90 percent of the trade. It will be its main window to the outside world. Seventy percent of the $3.4 billion project is financed by China’s Export-Import Bank. The new line replaces a narrow-gauge railroad built by France starting in 1894, when it controlled Djibouti. Ethiopians adjust to ambitious social housing project

Jemo is a colossal condominium complex, completed in 2010 and comprising over 10,000 apartments. When it opened, Jemo was the largest such housing site in the city, and today is home to some 50,000 people, many of whom work several miles away in the city centre. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism targets to have further 14 world heritages on UNESCO list during the second Growth and Transformation Plan period. Alongside the global recognition, the plan aims at preserving and handing down the nation's ancient values and heritages to posterity. Bogaletch Gebre fights FGM

Journalist Amy Yee looks at the pioneering work of Bogaletch Gebre of Ethiopia. Gebre founded a nonprofit called KMG that helped reduce the incidence of FGM from 97 percent to 3 percent in her home region of Kembatta Tembaro. This happened through on-the ground outreach and working within communities. Gebre underwent FGM herself as a girl; her sister died from it. As a girl, her father opposed her going to school but she went anyway.
