De eerste twee berichten in deze

over
nauwere
samenwerking
tussen
Ethiopië
en
Nederland én het enthousiasme van een
Tweede Kamerlid over Ploumen’s hulp en
handelsbeleid - contrasteren enigszins met
de verdere berichten. Die gaan over VNinstellingen, de Afrikaanse Unie en enkele
(grote) landen die zich uitspreken over
mensenrechtenschendingen
door
de
regering. Over een brand in de zwaar
bewaakte Kilinto gevangenis, waarbij 23
gedetineerden
omkwamen
en
overheidseenheden
op
gevangenen
schoten, die de vlammen probeerden te
ontvluchten.
Over
gearresteerde
demonstranten en duizend keer opdrukken
in de woestijn. Over protesterende
Ethiopiërs in wereldsteden, de armen
gekruist boven het hoofd of hun hoofd
kaalgeschoren. Na de Oromo en Amhara
protesteren nu ook de Konso tegen het
regeringsbeleid. De regering laat een deel
van in 2012 gevangen genomen moslims
vrij. Een voormalig minister vertelt hoe hij
aankijkt tegen de huidige onrust. De
redactie vond geen berichten over het
voortduren van de honger; daarom alleen
een foto. Het economisch nieuws begint
met een bericht uit Caïro, dat Egypte,
Soedan en Ethiopië het eens zijn over het
hoe en wat van technische studies over de
Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Om
leegloop tegen te gaan wil Ethiopië door
demonstranten aangevallen bedrijven
compenseren voor de geleden schade. Een
Nederlands bedrijf heeft al besloten
Ethiopië te verlaten. De regering blijft de
infrastructuur
versterken.
Een
treinverbinding tussen Addis Abeba en
Djibouti komt steeds dichterbij. Er zijn
plannen om dit jaar 10.000 km weg aan te
leggen. De hoofdstad wordt verrijkt met
metertaxi’s. Deze knipselkrant bevat
verder kritische gedachten over goud in
Ethiopië en olie in Somalië. En verder:
Lucy, kent u haar nog? Volgens
onderzoekers stierf zij 3,2 miljoen jaar
geleden door een val van twaalf meter uit
een boom. We eindigen in deze droeve tijd

Ethiopië en Nederland willen meer
samenwerken
At the margins of the 71st Session of the UN
General Assembly Foreign Minister, Tedros
Adhanom Ghebreyesus, discussed with Mrs.
Lilliane Ploumen about issues of migration and
refugees. Ploumen revealed that her country
is keen to work with Ethiopia and hailed
Ethiopia's open door policy to refugees from
neighbouring countries. Ethiopia is home to
close 800, 000 refugees.

Ploumen
‘Minister Ploumen wil hulpverlening aan arme
landen combineren met handel drijven. In
Ethiopië zag ik dat dit inderdaad werkt. Hier
zijn zo’n tachtig Nederlandse bedrijven actief.
Een ervan, Holland Dairy, produceert melk en
kaas en neemt melk af van Ethiopische
boeren, ook van heel kleine.’ Dijkgraaf
bezocht een gezin dat vroeger amper rond
kon komen en nu drie keer het minimumloon
verdient. Wat Nederlandse bedrijven aan de
opbouw van het land bijdragen, is vaak
blijvender dan allerlei oude vormen van
ontwikkelingshulp.

Ra'ad Al Hussein, is ‘deeply concerned about
repeated allegations of excessive and lethal
use of force against protestors, enforced
disappearances, and mass detentions,
including of children, as well as by worrying
restrictions on civil society, the media and
opposition.’ It was "mystifying" that the
Ethiopian government refused to allow his
office access to parts of the country where
human rights abuses have been alleged.

African Union issues statement
Ethiopia protests, calls for restraint
on
The African Union (AU) has finally spoken on
Ethiopia. The continental body issued a
statement from chairperson, Mrs. Nkosazana
Dlamini Zuma, that the AU was ‘following the
evolving socio-political situation over the last
few months in the Federal Democratic
Republic of Ethiopia with great concern.’ The
AU called for restraint on the part of parties
involved.

Duizend keer opdrukken in de
Ethiopische woestijn
Duizenden arrestanten belanden zonder
officiële aanklacht in detentiekampen. ‘Op het
heetst van de dag moesten we zware
oefeningen doen. Als je het niet volhield werd
je geslagen.’ Na deelname aan een protest
begin augustus in de hoofdstad Addis Abeba
werd basisschoolleraar Negash Amanuel (35)
vijftien dagen opgesloten in een detentiekamp
in de woestijn. Op die bewuste zaterdag in
augustus vertrok Amanuel naar het
Meskalplein. Bij aankomt waren er al
honderden mensen. Ze hielden spandoeken
omhoog met leuzen als ‘Stop de moord op
Oromo!’ en ‘Laat politieke gevangenen vrij!’
Het is het zoveelste protest van Oromo. Ze
voelen zich, evenals de Amharen, ernstig
achtergesteld.

Ethiopische Olympiër vraagt geen asiel
aan in de VS
Marathon runner, Feyisa Lilesa, who crossed
the line in second place with his arms above
his head in solidarity with Oromo activists in
Ethiopia, has repeated the gesture at a press
conference, saying his life would be in danger
if he returned home. He has arrived in the USA
and via crowd-funding $ 150,000 has been
collected to cover the costs. Lelisa says he has
no intention to run for the USA. He intends to
go back and run for Ethiopia, when the
situation changes.

Maximaal beveiligde gevangenis in
vlammen
The Ethiopian government has been accused
of gunning down political prisoners as they
flee burning Kilinto jail. Rights groups raise
concerns over fate of political prisoners held
in facility on the outskirts of Addis Ababa,
where 23 inmates died in a huge fire. While
the cause of the blaze remains unknown, the
Ethiopian government has admitted at least
two of the prisoners were gunned down by
the authorities. The Kilinto prison has become
notorious as a holding facility for jailed
Konso (Zuid Ethiopië) in verzet
There has been much publicity about the
massive anti-government protests by the
Oromo and the Amhara, the country’s two
largest ethnic groups. But a much smaller
group as the Konso in Ethiopia’s Southern
Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region
(SNNPR), located south of the famous Lake

with the same killing and jailing by the
government.

According to the chief prosecutor and ahead
of the Ethiopian new year, hundreds of
convicted Muslims and others have been
released. The president signed the pardon
after members of the muslimgroups had
expressed regret. They were serving a time for
terrorism charges or religious extremism. In
2012 many muslims had been sentenced for
long jail terms, after months-long protests in
which they accused the government of
unconstitutionally encouraging a moderate
teaching of Islam (called Al-Ahbash) and
dictating the election of community leaders to
support it at an Addis Ababa religious school.

Massive protests in Washington DC and
Paris
On sept 19, 2016, Ethiopian protesters in the
US, hit the streets of Washington DC despite
heavy rain, chanting ‘Stop the genocide in
Ethiopia’ and ‘We will not divided’, a message
to the regime in Ethiopia who massacred
thousands of unarmed protesters. On the 20th
Ethiopians in France demonstrated in Paris.
As protests continued to engulf parts of
Ethiopia’s Amhara and Oromia regions,
citizens have been shaving their heads as a
sign of solidarity with jailed opposition
leaders. People posted videos online of
themselves shaving off their hair with electric
razors in response to a letter smuggled out of
prison by Oromo political leader Bekele Gerba
and others. In some Ethiopian cultures, a
shaved head is part of the mourning process
after the death of a loved one.

Juneydi Saaddo, former president of Oromia
Regional State and cabinet-minister until
2012, wants the government to step down
and asks for an inclusive transitional
government. The hope of many that the death
of Meles Zenawi in 2012 would lead to a fresh
start has been blocked. Although the TPLF
leadership appointed a non-Tigrean Hailemariam Desalegn - to be Meles’
replacement, they simultaneously took swift
measures to cripple the new PM’s power. One
measure was the appointment of some 37
generals, almost all of them Tigreans.

compenseren

Esmeralda Farms uit
Aalsmeer bestormd. Volgens het concern is
van de kwekerij (150 hectare) vrijwel niets
meer over en bedraagt der schade tien
miljoen euro. De aanvallers belaagden het
bedrijf omdat het op gronden werkt die door
de overheid aan de omliggende dorpen waren
onttrokken. Dat Esmeralda Farms voorlopig
geen Ethiopische bloemen meer krijgt, is een
flinke klap, omdat het bedrijf rond een derde
van zijn omzet uit Ethiopië haalde. Het
ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft het
reisadvies voor Ethiopië aangescherpt.

De Ethiopische autoriteiten onderzoeken de
mogelijkheid om aangevallen rozenkwekers en
andere bloemenbedrijven in het noordwesten
te compenseren voor de schade, die zij bij
aanvallen van demonstranten opliepen.
Daarbij zijn vier Nederlandse ondernemingen.
Voor één bedrijf is de situatie in het land
reden om te stoppen. Daardoor komen
vijfhonderd mensen op straat te staan. De
Ethiopische Investeringscommissie (EIC) gaat
de schade inventariseren. Dat meldden
ministers Bert Koenders van Buitenlandse
Zaken en minister Lilianne Ploumen van
Buitenlandse Handel aan de Tweede Kamer.

In Khartoum, Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia signed
on September 20, the final contracts for the
technical studies to be conducted on the
Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Two French
consultancy firms will conduct the studies. An
English law firm will oversee the legal
arrangements. The French firms will assess the
cross-border environmental,
social
and
economic impacts of the dam. Ethiopia is
scheduled to finish construction of the
Renaissance Dam in 2017. Downstream
countries, especially Egypt, fear a potential
drought that would affect agriculture, industry
and drinking water as a result of the dam's
construction.

Track linking Ethiopia to Djibouti sea port
to open in October
Ethiopia expects to open its standard gauge
railway line linking the capital Addis Ababa
with the Red Sea State of Djibouti in October
2016. This project is at the heart of plans to
create new manufacturing firms in Ethiopia
and to boost trade. The track covers 800
kilometres, and was built by the China Railway
Corporation at a cost of $ 3.5 B. Girum Chala

Cement concurrentie
Development by dispossession? Gold in
Ethiopia, oil in Somalia
With the example of the Adola Gold Mine in
southern Ethiopia in mind, Asebe Regassa
Debelo writes critically about extractive
industries perceived as pathways to
accelerated development. During the colonial
period, these industries remained the bases of
colonial economy and at the same time
symbols of labour exploitation, displacement,
and oppression of native people. While these
industries were long established in central and
southern Africa, it is an emerging sector in
Eastern Africa. The discovery of oil in the
Turkana region of Northern Kenya and the
prospect of oil/gas in Ethiopia’s Lower Omo
belt and Ogaden region in addition to the
The plan of Africa’s richest man, Aliko
Dangote, to set up a cement plant in Ethiopia
could have a big impact on the cement market
in East Africa as the Adaberga wereda-based
plant starts exporting cement at almost 40
percent less than regional manufacturers. To
attract Dangote to the East African country,
the government offered to supply his
company with electricity at a discounted rate
of ‘three cent per kilowatt hour’ in exchange
of him building a plant there. This enabled
Dangote Cement to cut the cost of producing
a ton of cement by 60 percent. Dangote
intends to export cement to Kenya, to the
detriment of the local cement producers.

Extensive road construction/safety
The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) plans to
build 10,000 km road projects, half of them at
asphalt level, the other half at asphalt concert
levels. Most will be funded by the
government. In general, ERA plans to
renovate, upgrade and build a total of 23,136
km roads at a cost of 46.1 billion birr in this
budget year. The Authority renovated
upgraded and built more than 19,000 km
roads last fiscal year.
All in all, sixty-two people died in Ethiopia in
10,000 traffic accidents in the first eight
months of 2016. Almost seven thousand
persons were heavily injured, while the same
number of others sustained light injuries.

Syria and Ethiopia: Why migration will
continue
In the journal ‘Ethnic and Racial Studies’,
political scientist Anja van Heelsum argues
that the migration crisis that started in the
summer of 2015 was not an unexpected or
sudden phenomenon, and that it is likely to
continue in the future. Migration is bound to
persist due to the ongoing political crisis in the
Middle East, while in Africa, the high
population pressure, widespread poverty and
changing aspirations of young people, in
particular, those who are better educated and
informed about more privileged lifestyles
elsewhere, will also keep contributing in
migration. She focused on Syria and Ethiopia,
as they are typical examples of two migration
phenomena: the first of refugee migration and
the second of mainly poverty-related
(economic) migration. She specifically
considered the role of education level/class.

Addis to introduce meter taxi service
Some 836 meter-taxis imported tax free by 26
associations would begin transportation
service in the new Ethiopian year. Speaking at
their inauguration, Transport Minister Dr.
Workneh Gebeyehu said that the taxi are
helpful to address the acute transportation
problem in the city through modern and
alternative service. The taxi fare would be paid
based on distance.

Volgens het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek
hebben 16.347 Nederlanders een Ethiopische
achtergrond, tegen 39.465 een Somalische en
8.151 een Eritrese. Het is de vraag of het
aantal van ruim 16.000 klopt, omdat Eritreërs
tot aan de onafhankelijkheid van hun land in
1993, ook als Ethiopiër werden gerekend.

Lucy uit boom gevallen
Onderzoekers uit Texas reconstrueerden de
laatste momenten van het leven van Lucy, de
vrouw van 1,06 meter lang, die rechtop kon
lopen, maar haar lange armen ook gebruikte
om in bomen te klimmen. Lucy viel vanaf een
hoogte van ruim 12 meter. Ze raakte de grond
met meer dan 55 kilometer per uur, landde
eerst op haar voeten en viel daarna voorover.
Breuken in haar bovenarmen tonen dat Lucy
haar val toen probeerde te breken met haar
handen. Met toestemming van het Nationaal
