Sunflowers
by Cathy Maurer
Sunflowers begin as small seeds.
The inside of the sunflower seed is called
the kernel. The kernel can be eaten.
When the seed is planted, it will grow
into a sunflower.
Once the blooms of the sunflower die,
and the seeds have had time to dry,
we can harvest the seeds.
We can plant the seeds that we have
harvested, or we can roast them so
that they can be eaten.
Sunflower kernels can be
baked into bread.
Sunflower kernels can be made into a
spread or butter like peanut butter.
Sunflower oil is used in cooking and is
made by pressing the seeds.
Sunflowers are beautiful and very
useful flowers.
