WRF Workshop – 14 Sept. 2007
Joe Santanello
Research Associate, ESSIC/UMCP
NASA-GSFC Hydrological Sciences Branch
Research Goals
- To accurately understand, model and predict the role of Local Coupling (‘LoCo’) of land–atmosphere
interactions in the evolution of land-atmosphere fluxes and state variables.
- Employ WRF as a testbed to develop a methodology to study factors controlling L-A interactions and
derive diagnostics to evaluate a range of community modeling efforts.
WRF-ARW
● 1-km horizontal resolution
●
12-36 hour simulations
●
3 PBL (YSU, MYJ, MRF) + 3 LSM (Noah(v2.6), RUC, 5-layer) schemes
→ IHOP 2002 Exp. – 6/12 June
NASA’s Land Information System (LIS)
●
Suite of LSMs, coupled to WRF
●
Flexible resolution, forcing and parameters
●
Provides spinup capability for improved initialization
Coupled LIS-WRF
●
1-km horizontal resolution
●
2 nested domains over SGP
●
3 PBL + 2 LSM (Noah(v2.7.1), CLM2) schemes
→ CASES99 and IHOP 2002 Exp.
