Literature Surveys in Development Economics
Andrea Helfant BA Economics and International Development,
Supervised by Professor Matthieu Chemin
Background
The study of international
development utilizes many
measures of growts such as
health, education and GDP.
To a large extent, however, all
development
studies
are
rooted in basic economic
concepts. Students wishing to
study
international
development who do not have
a background in economics
often encounter problems and
find certain classes very
challenging
Objectives
The goal of this project is to
create a textbook for ECON
313–Economic Development
1. The textbook will present
complex economic concepts
in a way that students with
very little background in
economics can understand.
Process
Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
• Listen and watch recorded lectures from past ECON 313
classes
• Adapt lectures into textbook format
• Input lectures into lyx
• Lyx is a word processing software used for professional
publishing, which makes formatting large and complicated
documents more manageable
• Create graphs and charts to support the text using the World
Bank Databank
Next Steps
Data will be collected for all of
the figures and charts in the
textbook. The running data
comparison will be between
Kenya
(Professor
Chemin’s
research focus) and Canada.
Literary reviews will also be done
on research pertaining to the
different
chapters
in
the
textbook.
