Market’s View
• FACTS:
– The SUCCESS of IEEE 802.16m relies on the success of
WirelessMAN-OFDMA
– The SUCCESS of WirelessMAN-OFDMA relies on more
competitive WirelessMAN-OFDMA product
• LTE in the market:
– Chunghwa Telecom (Taiwan): FDD with10+10MHz
• Downlink: 60Mbps @ 0km/hr and 10-40Mbps @ 80km/hr
• Uplink: 20Mbps without mobility @10MHz
– TeliaSonera (Stockholm): FDD with 20+20MHz
• Average: DL: 33.4 Mbps and UL: 12.7 Mbps

Lesson from these FACTs
• WiMAX Situation
– 10MHz product only
– HARQ can only support category 4
• Maximum throughput can not exceed 20Mbps
• Multi-carrier can be considered for 16e as well
• User will have different view of WiMAX due
to multi-carrier

Market Timing
• Mature product of IEEE 802.16m is hard to be
delivered by 2013
– Our experience told us Corrigendum requires some time
– Field trial need operator to invest money
– However, operator do not consider IEEE 802.16m if they
can not return their investment from 16e network
– Therefore, industrial investment will be postponed
• Conclusion:
– Three to five years gap between 16e and 16m
– 16e enhancement can be filled in the gap and enhance the
user experience of WiMAX

Benefits to 16e and 16m Eco-system
• 16e Chip vendor
– New product feature means higher profit chip
– Higher profit invites more vendor join 16e supply
chain
– 16e can have more players
• 16e Base station vendor
– Another business opportunity for base station
upgradation
– New product for high end market such as US,
Japan and Taiwan

Another Issues
• Power consumption
• MIMO
• ICIC
