Spring Cleaning at NIHS





Dread it?
Necessary!
Strips accumulation of “junk”
Gets back to original intention;
make house “shine”
Today we are taking that
approach with RtI.
Learning Targets for the Day



I can understand what RtI is and
why is it important.
I can be familiar with another
blended learning model, lab
rotation.
I can be inspired and
motivated about the importance
of my chosen profession.
RtI: Criteria for Success





I will be reminded of what a learning gap
feels like.
I will understand the parallel between RtI
and the ISS model.
I will recognize the goal tiers of student
needs and support in RtI.
I will understand methods used to
determine RtI data and the results of that
data.
I have an idea of the next steps NIHS is
taking in this process and can reflect on
possible teaching implications.
Blended Learning:
Criteria for Success


I will observe the format utilized
today for learning (lab rotation
and flipped).
I will begin to reflect about if and
when these formats could work
for my curriculum and
classroom.
My Motivation’s Criteria for
Success


I will de-stress and be reminded
of the power and impact of my
chosen career.
What I do every day, with every
child, matters!!!

RtI



What did you think while
participating in game?
How did you feel?
Did you change any of your
normal behaviors?
Burn, learn, firm, perm
RtI

Shame Avoidance

Are any of “those students” in
your classes? What are their
names?
What is RtI?
“NC Responsiveness to Instruction
(NCRtI) is a multi-tiered framework
which promotes school
improvement through engaging,
high quality instruction by using a
team approach to guide educational
practices, using a problem solving
model based on data to address
student needs and maximize growth
for all.”
NC DPI
Does that sound familiar?
In a “typical” world . . .



80% of our students’s learning needs
would be met in their core academic
classrooms.
15% of our students would need
additional support (intervention), in
addition to their core classes, to be
successful.
5% would need intensive, 1:1 or 1:3
support, as well as interventions and
their regular core classes instruction
to be successful.
Let’s examine reading . . .





What have we experienced,
year after year?
Studied all ninth-graders
AIMSWEB
District has built this study,
slowly working up to freshmen
Future impacts???
In the NIHS world . . .



Do we have the 80-15-5 “typical”
student skill set?
Does the district?
Now what?
Now what?



Highly-engaged, well-planned
classes that integrate as much
reading, writing, and problemsolving as possible
Plans for next year’s course
matrix to support the needs that
we are continuing to uncover
Reading training!
Now what?

Continue, and “spring clean”
some of our current practices
(i.e. enhancement, EC teachers’
5-day/week eblocks, Raider
Academy, CWT data study,
baseline and benchmark
analysis, CFA analysis, PLC
practice, PDSAs)
Now what?


Blended Learning grant allows
for devices, which will aide in
the differentiation of texts,
student products, classroom
design, communication, etc.
Grant also provides additional
coaching support for the
integration of said devices (i.e.
Blended Learning Coach)
