FEE Instrument Commissioning
5/15 to 6/25
Conduct FEE Beam readiness review in Mar.-Apr., 2009
Open Dump stoppers, RP initial survey (1-2 d)
Insert Direct Imager, check upstream apertures (1-2 d)
Commission adjustable slits (1-2 d)
Insert all undulators, 13.6 GeV electrons, RP survey (2-3 d)
Insert gas attenuator apertures, check alignment (1-2 d)
Commission gas attenuator/solid attenuators (1-2 d)
Center reticule on beam, project through C1 (1-2 d)
Decide if OMS realignment is necessary (+/- 1mm range)
(0-5 d)

FEE Instrument Commissioning (cont.)
Commission gas detectors (2-4 d)
apertures inserted
add gas
power magnet
compare APD & PMT response to attenuation
Commission K-monochromator (4-6 d)
Transmit beam through 4 bounces (~8.172 eV)
Checkout quadrant photodiode (keep intensity low)
Measure x-ray energy, undulator bandwidth
Measure photon flux (part of CD4 goals) (1 d)

Offset Mirrors
6/26 to 7/16
Tune linac for appropriate energy
Begin with soft x-ray offset mirror system (SOMS)
Insert M1S, use P1 to set angle, translation (2-4 d)
Insert M2S, use P2S to set angle, translation (1-2 d)
Insert M3S2, use P3S2 to set angle, translation (1-2 d)
Retract M3S2 and insert M3S1, use P3S1 to set angle,
translation (1-2 d)
Retract M1S and apply same procedure to HOMS (3-5 d)
Priority is SOMS for hutch 2 - delivers beam to AMO
experiment

SASE Optimization
7/17 to 8/13
Change linac to 4.52 GeV (nominal 908 eV), check beam
center with K-mono (keep intensity low, 1-2 d)
Switch to direct imager, look for FEL (should be able to see
signals ≥100 nJ)
If unable to find FEL, measure undulator K values
Change linac back to 13.56 GeV, 10 Hz
Use K-mono to measure spectrum (3-5 d)
Optimize SASE (vary bunch compression, emittance, RF,
BBA, etc.)
Above 50 J, imager saturates, need gas attenuator

SASE Optimization (cont.)
If FEL reaches ~0.1-1.0 mJ, commission calorimeter (3-5 d)
Need to limit linac to 10 Hz
Once calorimeter is commissioned, cross-calibrate the gas
detectors and the direct imager (2-3 d)
Measure position stability
Electron energy stability already < 0.1% (at end of linac)
During off-hours, deliver beam to AMO experiment

AMO Experiment
HF Physics chamber will be in place by May 1, 2009
Laser will be ready at the same time
Commissioning of laser transport to AMO exp. begins
Diagnostics chamber to be in place June, 2009
KB optics delivered in May or June, 2009
Begin aligning KB optics, HF physics chamber, and
diagnostics chamber in mid-July

Summary
Very tight schedule between first beam to FEE and User
Run - driven by FY08 budget limitations.
Very tight schedule between AMO experiment installation
and User Run - driven by FY08 budget limitations.
We think the goal of achieving lasing at 1.5 nm by Aug.Sep., 2009 is reasonable
Experiments in Fall, 2009 are not part of CD 4 goals
