AMO Experimental Plans
Capitalize on unique nature of LCLS light to
study interaction with simples forms of
matter – atoms, molecules & clusters
1013 ph/pulse
Pulse duration ~200fsec
800-2000 eV for soft x-ray branch
▼Chaotic pulses
▼Poor
synchronization

AMO Experimental Plans
High Field Physics end-station to study
photo-ionization of atoms, molecules,
clusters:
Focus beam to ~1mm2
Pulsed gas jet
Electron spectrometers (5)
Ion spectrometers (3)
X-ray fluorescence spectrometers (2)

AMO Plans – refocus optics
Need adaptive optics to change spot size
(control power), move focus ~1m
Ideally two sets of optics – for 1μm focus and
<100nm focus

AMO Plans – Ion Spectrometers
Very first experiment – look at charge state
distribution
●Simple TOF spectrometer at first
●Then want to get more
sophisticated and use momentum
imaging, either with integrating
detector (i.e. velocity map imaging)
or time & position sensitive detector
(i.e. reaction microscope/ColTRIMS)

AMO Plans – Electron Spectrometers
Greater insight using more discriminating
technique – angle-resolved PES
Pulsed beam ideally suited to time-of-flight

AMO Plans – need for diagnostics
Large pulse-to-pulse
variations
Transparent target – can
use downstream beam to
measure properties:
Power
Bandwidth
X-correlation with laser
Etc…
