The Flexible Clinical Experience (FCE)

FCE Program Overview
• Four, one-week electives, embedded in the CCE curriculum
• Provides opportunity for individual exploration in a broad
range of specialties related to healthcare
• Aims to provide exposure to areas not covered by the core
curriculum.
• Student driven, to allow for career exploration and to discover
ones interests
FCE Calendar
• One week terms starting in June 2016, through March 2017
• There are 9 discrete terms when the FCE will be offered
– Spring break can be used for FCE week
• On average 50 students will be participating in each FE term
• Active student participating in this program is key to its success

What is acceptable for an FCE offering
• The experience should be related to an aspect of medicine,
healthcare, medical education, or healthcare administration.
• Each experience will be supervised by a qualified supervisor,
who will be responsible for approving and evaluating an
experience conceived by the student.
• The experience should have a clearly stated objective(s)
FCE Requirements
• Diverse experiences
• No more than one repetition
– Repeated FCEs should occur in consecutive terms
• The four experiences must be in at least two separate departments, i.e.
do not choose all experiences in medical specialties, surgical
specialties, pediatrics etc.
• At least two FCEs must be clinical
• Other experiences can be medical administration or education, research,
and community service

Experiences that are NOT acceptable FCEs
• Self study time for boards, exam preparation
• More than one repetition of an experience
• An experience that has a prerequisite you do not fulfill
• An experience that is a continuation of your mandatory clerkship
experience
• This is not time to simply “work on your Capstone”

– available on the FCE web page
– may not be available for all dates
– may not be offered in the field of your choice

• Look at the FAQ section on the FCE web pages!
• Start early! ~ it always takes longer to get the approvals you need
~ Start early!
• Be aware of the 4 week deadlines- all FCE assignment schedules
must be complete 4 weeks prior to start of a block.
– ! Exception: If you have no assigned FCE for a scheduled FE term,
we will approve a self designed FCE up to 2 weeks before the start
date of your session, provided you have already secured an approval
from the supervisor
