What is a point prevalence survey?
 A count of ‘events’ in a specified population at a point
in time

 A hospital will be surveyed each day in the month
of May, 2014

Standard 3 - Healthcare associated infections
Standard 4 - Medication safety
Standard 5 - Patient identification
Standard 8 - Pressure injuries
Standard 10 - Falls
Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
WHAT?
What type of data is being collected?
 Patient Identification: How many patient id bands does the
patient have? What colour are they?
 HAI: How many PIVC does the patient have? Has the PIVC
been in situ more than 3 days?
 Pressure Injuries: How many pressure injuries does the
patient have? What type of pressure relieving support
surfaces are in place?
WHICH?
 Which patients will be included?
 All multi day inpatients admitted before midnight before day
of survey
Exclusions
 Dialysis patients
 Psychiatric patients
 Unqualified newborns
 Hospital in the home clients
 Day surgery patients
 Day procedure patients
HOW?
What will my role be as a surveyor?
 Paired with clinical team member
 Direct patient contact
 Data collection on iPads
 Examining the medical record
What can I do to get involved?
 Volunteers are needed to be surveyors
 No clinical experience is required
 Commit to an education session and at least one survey day
 Get your team involved
