Knowledgebase on economic statistics United Nations Statistics Division/DESA Background • Creation of a knowledgebase discussed at the last EGM in 2007 • Refined at EGM in 2008 • Purpose: • Repository for information on all aspects of enterprise statistics • Facilitate sharing of information for countries improving their economic statistics system 2 Navigation • Document search • Useful if users know what they are looking for • Pre-determined structure • Allows users to “explore” the contents of the knowledgebase • Allows user to see related documents 3 Navigation • To allow users to find information easier, multiple structure options are used • Currently a multiple tree structure with two entry points • Additional search by keywords and “tags” is possible 4 Navigation • First tree structure reflects the Statistical Production Process • Second tree structure is based on statistical domains • This may be more intuitive to most users • Most documents can be found in both structures 5 Structure • Structure has been chosen with the intent to cover more areas in the future • Existing elements: • • • • • • Industrial statistics Distributive trade Environmental accounting International merchandise trade National Accounts … 6 Structure 7 Structure • Currently implemented: • Limited structure to simplify startup of the knowledge base and have a common starting point for all economic domains 8 Structure • If needed, original structure can be extended to: • • • • • • • • • • Needs and uses (relevance) Planning and organization Management and budgeting Questionnaire design and testing Collection of data Data processing Sampling techniques Creation and maintenance of business register Creation and maintenance of area frames Data quality frameworks 9 Scope • Initial proposal: • International recommendations for the selected domains • All information on country practices, including: • • • • Legal background Management documents Questionnaires and similar forms Technical guidelines (collection, sampling, processing etc.) • Reports on methodology • Quality reports 10 Knowledge base • How does search and navigation work? 11 12 13 14 Content • First set of documents has been loaded from a small selected group of countries • Knowledgebase is expected to go public in July 2009 • Countries will be invited to actively participate by adding relevant documents 15 Knowledge base • http://unstats.un.org/unsd/econstatkb 16
