Ongoing project 1:
Disability measurement

UN Development Account project on Improvement of Disability
Statistics in Support of Regional Census Programme, implemented
by ESCAP in 2008-09
– Integration of ICF-based data collection on disability into regular
national statistical systems
– Targets national statisticians and health experts in 20 countries
– Partnering with the Washington Group, WHO, UNSD, SIAP
– Regional workshop on census-based disability data collection
– Census provides sampling frame for disability surveys that
collect detailed data for policy needs
– Developing an extended set of questions for survey-based
collection
– Country pilot tests and subsequent data analysis
Ongoing project 2:
Microdata management
• Improving access to microdata in the region – World
Bank/PARIS21 Project implemented by ESCAP in 20072008
– Identifying and addressing constraints for microdata
dissemination
– National policies and plans for dissemination
– Documentation of metadata – IHSN Microdata Management
Toolkit
– Archiving
– Anonymization
– Working initially with six countries, with sharing of
experiences in a regional workshop in Q2/Q3 2008

– Promoting Global Census Principles and Recommendations
– Building a migration data system around population censuses
– Supporting effective use of information technology in population
censuses
