Goals of WMU social media

Role of the Office of University Relations
 Maintains and monitors flagship social media accounts.
 Western Michigan University Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram,
Snapchat, LinkedIn and Google+ accounts.
 Produces and communicates social media guidelines and
policies.
 Supports social media capabilities in WMU CMS.
 Assists units and departments across campus in promoting the
great things happening at WMU, and serves as consultants for
social media account creation and strategy.
 Serves as central body for social media organization.
 Account registration and visual identity support.
 Gatherings for faculty and staff who engage in social media on behalf of WMU.

Last approved in 2011 by the Web Governance Council.
Currently under review.
Suggestions for updates to the policy are welcomed. Send

Social media and WMU CMS
 Social media badges.


Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, Weibo.
Snapchat badge functionality will be added.
 All badges are published by university relations.



Functions as a verification check for registered and up-to-date accounts.
Eventually all admin contact information will be housed in WMU CMS.
Badges are not published if required admin information is not present or if an
account fails to meet social media policy criteria.

Bringing together campus social media users
• Since September 2013, university relations has been holding
semi-regular gatherings for faculty, staff and students who
represent WMU in an official capacity on social media.

Informal, agenda-free lunches or brunches.
Webinars.
Focused discussions.
Guest speakers.
• WMU social media users gather virtually via a secret Facebook
group.

• Next gathering is 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in the Bernhard
Center’s Faculty Dining Room.
• Chris Hunt, director of marketing communications in the Office of University
Relations, will talk about telling the WMU story.
