River status
STATUS/IMPACTS
Overall status
12 RWB - 9 high, 1good, 1 moderate, 1 poor. There are 2 lake water bodies in this
WMU, both are good status and extrapolated (Crotty's Lough or Coumgaurha Lough,
Coumshingaun Lough).
Status elements
Q score dictates overall status, except for 1 good WB which is driven by Phys
Chemical status. Phys Chemical passes at 3 monitored sites. Status for all 9 high
status WBs are extrapolated. Chemical Status not monitored.
Possible Impacts EPA Water Quality
2004
CLODIAGH (PORTLAW)- (SE_16_3698, Status 2009 - Poor) Mostly satisfactory but
continuing polluted at Clonea due to sewage discharge and only moderate status at
first location as a result of suspected intermittent agricultural run-off. (Status based on
Q score 3)

PRESSURES/RISKS
Good
Nutrient sources
Most TP is diffuse (94%) mainly from agriculture (82%), unsewered properties
(4%) and WWTP (6%).
Point pressures
2 WWTPs: Clonea Power, Rathgormack.
No current Section 4s although 1 No. old Section 4(Tannery -disused) is located at
Portlaw – refer to Map for location)
No IPPCs.
No WTPs.
Wastewater
Treatment
Plants
(WWTP)
and
Industrial Discharges
Clonea Power WWTP – at risk
Rathgormack WWTP – at risk according to local authority
Waterford Co Co are proposing the construction of a 350 pe secondary treatment
plant to serve the area.
Tannery – at risk, routine EPA monitoring has indicated elevated levels of
ammonia downstream of this site although it has been closed since 1984.

Bad
Yet to be determined
SELECTED ACTION PROGRAMME
NB All relevant basic measures, general supplementary measures and SEA mitigation measures
apply
Point Sources
See Action Table for Clonea Power WWTP below.
Rathgormack WWTP - Proposal for secondary treatment plant (PE 350)
in the area.
Tannery – undertake further investigation of the pollution problem
Quarries, Mines &
Landfills
There are no quarries landfills or mines within the WMU.
Agriculture
There are 5 waterbodies at risk from Agriculture within the WMU: SE_16_4170,
SE_16_3698, SE_16_1225, SE_16_3466
Diffuse Sources
On-site systems
There are 718 septic tanks in this WMU, none of them are posing a risk to water
quality due to their density, location and unsuitable hydrogeological conditions.
AGRICULTURE – Good Agricultural Practice Regulations and
Enforcement.
Other
Forestry
There are no waterbodies within the WMU at risk from Forestry.
Dangerous
substances
There are no waterbodies at risk from dangerous substances within the WMU.
Protection of drinking water, abstraction control and future licensing
Freshwater Pearl Mussel Sub Basin Plans – measures to protect FPM.
Water Supply Scheme and Sewerage Scheme also identified for Portlaw.
Morphology
There are no waterbodies at risk.
Abstractions
There are 2 waterbodies at risk from abstractions within the WMU SE_16_3698
and SE_16_723.
Other
There are no HMWB or AWB within the WMU.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
OBJECTIVES
Future Pressures
and Developments
Restore 2015
Protect
11 River water bodies and 2 lake water bodies.
Alternative Objectives
Extended Deadlines – 1 water body (status recovery from poor)
Throughout the river basin management cycle future pressures and
developments will need to be managed to ensure compliance with the
objectives of the Water Framework Directive and the Programme of
Measures will need to be developed to ensure issues associated with
these new pressures are addressed.
New Modifications or Development – none requiring alternative
objectives at present.
HMWB/AWB – none
River Data
These tables outline water body information including status and a breakdown of its elements, protected areas, objectives and timescales.
