About the video….
The video was about the treatment of raw
water. It showed us how they treated raw
water from Dongjiang river. It also thought
us about the different processes in treating
raw water,for example sedimentation,
chlorination and filtration. Water receives
lots of treatment before it enters our
buildings and it is very safe for us to drink.
Touring the treatment works
The tour guide took us to the real treatment works, where the real
machines were doing their respective jobs. It was huge and
exciting to watch. The guides also showed us how they added
chemicals to the raw water and also showed us pictures of the
bacteria that were present in the raw water. We also saw a model
of the sedimentation process. It contained different types of
rocks and soil. I am very proud of the workers who are working
so hard and trying their best to keep the water quality clean and
safe for us to drink.
How Water Is Treated
During the water treatment process, raw water (untreated water)
is dosed with chemicals for mixing and then passes to the
clarifiers where coagulation and flocculation of the impurities
in the water will take place. Settled water then flows into filters
of sand or anthracite for removal of the more finely divided
suspensions.
The filtered water passes into contact tanks where dosed
chlorine and lime are added to disinfect and control the
alkalinity of the final treated water. Fluoride is also added to
minimize the risk of dental decay. A small amount of residual
chlorine is maintained in the water to keep it free from
bacteria on the rest of its journey. The final water is pumped
into a system of water mains, stored in service reservoirs and
Safe Drinking Water
Hong Kong enjoys one of the safest water supplies in
the world. The quality of the water conforms both
chemically and bacteriologic ally to the Guidelines for
Drinking-water Quality recommended by the World
Health Organization. Water Supplies Department is
committed to supply the public with water that is
clear, odorless, wholesome and free from pathogenic
bacteria.
With proper treatment and stringent quality monitoring
and control, Hong Kong is assured of a safe and
wholesome water supply which complies with the
World Health Organization Guidelines for Drinkingwater Quality.
Water Quality Control
In the treatment process, the water quality throughout
the supply system is continuously monitored by
professionally qualified chemists under the Water
Science Division of the Water Supplies Department
through
a
series
of
physical,
chemical,
bacteriological,
limn
logical,
biological
and
radiological examinations.
Samples are regularly taken at intakes, storage
reservoirs, treatment works, service reservoirs, trunkmains and consumers' taps to ensure that the water
quality complies with the WHO guidelines. More than
100 000 water samples are taken and tested each
year.
