Standardizing data collection and management for Pacific Island coastal fisheries and aquaculture Working Paper 5 Coastal fisheries data collection Fishery independent resource surveys • Site monitoring (climate change, MPA, habitat & resource status) • Large scale surveys targeting a specific resource (sea cucumber, trochus, clams etc) Fishery dependent surveys • Landing & market surveys • Catch & effort logbooks • Domestic shipments & exports Socio-economic surveys • Household & fisher surveys Aquaculture data collection • Farm inventory • Production • Farming data (feed, stock, mortality, growth,…) • Socio-economic surveys targeting farmers Numerous survey designs & forms Data often entered in Excel in the absence of database Ad hoc surveys : that might explain why you don’t get the whole picture Even if it fits some specific needs Data collection must derive from management questions Management questions Information needs Sampling & form design Implementation Possibly use of new technologies Why are you collecting data ? (what information are you seeking ?) Choose the appropriate tools for your various information needs & available resources. Fail ! Fail ! Fail ! Technology is not a magic wand Mobile solutions are attractive • Ubiquity • Camera, GPS • 3G but… • Data entry is difficult on a tablet or smart phone (compared to desktop data entry with keyboard & mouse) • Harsh environment, greasy fingers Mobile solutions are suitable for some survey types but not all Why we need standardization • • • • To save cost & time and ease training To maximize survey outputs To allow comparison of results & trends To ease data sharing How we can improve standardization • Use existing survey methodologies & associated databases (don’t reinvent the wheel) • Provide feedback (to SPC) so that we can improve survey design/software • Inform us of additional needs not already covered • Consult SPC before designing a new type of survey Proposed developments for 2015-2016 • Database for aquaculture (farm inventory, production,…) • Database for FAD related data not covered by TUFART (socioeconomic data,…) • Trial mobile applications where applicable • Database for domestic shipments & exports of coastal resources Questions & comments
