To tell what time it is for the time at a quarter
after the hour:
It is 1:15

(It’s one and a quarter)
Es la una y quince. (fifteen)
It is 2:15

Son las tres y cuarto
(quince)
To tell what time it is at a quarter before the
hour:
It is 1:45
Son las dos menos cuarto
(quince)
(it is two minus a quarter)
It is 2:45
Son las tres menos cuarto
(quince)
It is 12:45
Es la una menos cuarto (quince)
To tell what time it is if it is not on the hour, half
hour or quarter hour, tell the hour and how
many minutes it is after (“y”) or before the
hour:
It is 1:05
Es la una y cinco
It is 6:23
Son las seis y veintitrés
It is 11:13
Son las once y trece
It is 12:50
It is 3:40
It is 11:54
Es la una menos diez
Son las cuatro menos veinte
