The Use of Force

Plot
The story takes place in a poor family.
When the doctor receives the notice
and invites the new patient, he first
meets the startled-looking mother and
is led to the kitchen, where is the only
warm place in the house. The child was
cold, quite, has no expression to her
face. From her flushing face and rapidly
breath, the doctor knows that she has a
high fever.
The doctor begins the diagnosis as usual. In
order to make sure whether the child suffers
from diphtheria, the doctor needs to take a
look at her throat. However, the child refuses
to let the doctor take a look. She screams,
struggles, and does everything that can stop
the doctor from diagnosing. They tried for a
long time. Although the parents don’t trust
him, the doctor tries his best. The doctor is
worried about the sickness. At last, the
doctor uses force to make the child open her
mouth and finds out the real disease.
Analysis of the main character
The doctor’s behavior towards the girl and
this young patient's reaction emphasize the
difficulties people have separating emotions
and standards.
 Olson – she didn’t want to open her month.
 Her mother- “Aren’t you ashamed?”
 William Carlos - “Look what you’ve done. The
nice man… ”
Point of view - First person
Language - This story use English and
medical nouns to write.
Symbol and theme
The force and the doctor he made no
secret in the text of the written practice
patients and their families unable to obtain
the cooperation of the frustration suffered.
No matter, he needed to express his
professional manner.
Features of the story
 There are some features in the story. First,
there is no any quote in their dialogue.
Therefore we difficult to understand who is
speaking or it is an act or convocation.
 Second, some grammars in sentences are
uncompleted; in order to express the family is
poor. For example, Nothing doing.一動也不動
ground my teeth in disgust - 咬牙切齒
Our reactions about this story

Using force is not always wrong or illegal.
In the story, the doctor uses force to make
himself be able to diagnose the little girl and
give her the treatment to save her from dying
result from the serious disease. There is
nothing that is definitely right or definitely
wrong. And her parents love their child,
because they are poor and still spend money
to find a doctor and when doctor came, Olson
sat on her father’s lap.
