The purpose of this unit is to learn about what
a conversation might be like in a situation
where you have to tell your boss you're leaving
the job;or you're being told by one of your
subordinates that he / she is leaving a job﹒
Think about all sorts of reasons why
someone might want to leave a job, and
how do people talk it.
Peter is thinking about leaving a job he has
been at for 5 years.
Peter
He has made plans to go abroad and study for
a degree.
He goes to talk to his boss, Mr. Johnson, about
it.
Peter knocks on the door.
Peter
Johnson:Who is it ?
Johnson:
Peter: It's me, Peter.
Peter: 是我,Peter。
Johnson:Oh , yes , Peter . Come in please , sit
down.
Peter: Thank you.
Peter:
Johnson:I got your memo this morning . Is there
something you want to talk to me about?
Johnson:
Peter: Actually, I want to tell you that I'm
leaving the company.
Peter:
Johnson:Really ? What seems to be the problem.
Johnson:
Peter: Oh ,don't get me wrong ,there's no
problem with the job .It's just that I think it's time
for me to go back to school again to further my
studies I'm leaving for Boston U beginning of the
next fall semester.
Peter:
Johnson:Oh...right...I do remember that you've
always wanted to go study abroad.
Johnson:
Peter: Yes ,and this was supposed to be a temp
job to get me the money I need to go to graduate
school .Now I'm in a good place financially and I
think it's time for me to move on to the next step
I hope you understand that.
Peter:
Johnson:Don't worry ,I do understand .You told
me about your plans when you first took the
job .I appreciate your honesty .Now I'm starting
to worry about finding a replacement .You've
been the best on my team ,whoever comes after
you is going to have a hard time trying to fill
your shoes .
Johnson:
Peter: You are being too kind .I'm sure you'll
find someone just as capable.
Peter:
Jonson: Let's hope so .So are you going to be
okay ,money – wise ,not working for maybe
three to four years?
Jonson:
Peter: I got granted a scholarship so living
expenses is all I have to worry about ,and I have
been saving up.
Peter:
Johnson:So when do you plan to leave?
Johnson:
Peter: I'm thinking the end of this year ,is that
ok? That way I'll be able to finish the cases I
have on my hands now .And it'll give you time to
find the replacement.
Peter:
Johnson:Alright then, I guess that's that. I got to
say ,it’s been great working with you .I hope we
have the chance to work together again in the
future.
Johnson:
Peter: There’s definitely the possibility .We’ll
see how things go after I get my degree.
Peter:
Johnson:Just give me a call.
Johnson:
Peter: Ha ha ,thank you so much ,that’s the
greatest compliment.
Peter:
Johnson:well ,best of luck with your studies.
Johnson:
Peter: thank you for being so understanding.
Peter:
Fin
Please give us a big hand.
Thank you.
