Good Ateonorfn! • Paesle get out yuor parctcie wrok form Mnoady’s lcturee, we wlil be gniog thuogrh the asnrews in aoubt 10 mnieuts. I got this! No problem! • Use the Periodic Table to identify Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids. • Predict different properties of elements based on their position in the PT. • Use the PT to name the elements found in simple compounds. • Identify that living things are made mainly of the elements SPONCH • Describe Carbon in terms of it’s importance in living systems There are three main types of elements on the Periodic Table. METALS • Most metals are: shiny malleable [can be pounded into thin sheets] and ductile [can be drawn into fine wires]. good conductors Most have high melting points NON-METALS are elements are… -dull. -brittle, hard, or soft -Poor conductors. -tend to have relatively low melting points. METALLOIDS •are substances that exhibit some metallic and some nonmetallic properties. •Some are used as semi-conductors in the computer industry. [e.g. silicon chips] What’s so special about C? What is so special about Carbon? 1. C is found in many different compounds. It is in the food you eat, the clothes you wear, the cosmetics you use and the gasoline that fuels your car. 2. Carbon is the sixth most abundant element in the universe. 3. In addition, carbon is a very special element because it plays a dominant role in the chemistry of life. Other elements in cells… • 99% of all living things are made up of just FOUR elements: C, H, O, & N. • Phosphorus [P] and Sulfur [S] make up the 1%. • Just remember SPONCH! So you know the elements in living things… • SULFUR • PHOSPHOROUS • OXYGEN • NITROGEN • CARBON • HYDROGEN
