Observing Operations Concept Document
Elizabeth McGrath
NGAO PD Team Meeting #6
March 19, 2009
Document Overview
• “This document should define an observing operations
conceptual design that meets the SRD requirements in a
manner that maximizes the scientific productivity.”
• Scope and applicability:
– “The OOCD describes how the features and functions of the
design described in the SDM will be used to carry out the
observations described in the science cases.”
– Calibration of the AO system will be covered in a separate
AO Calibration Document.
– NGAO configurations will be covered in a separate
Sequencers Definition Document.

Document Overview (continued)
• OOCD has been evolving as B2C design has evolved
• A number of science performance simulation tools have
been or are being developed in support of the OOCD:
–
–
–
–
–
–
Observing Efficiency Calculator (D. LeMignant)
Throughput and Emissivity Budget (A. Bouchez, D. Gavel)
Imaging Simulation Tool (F. Marchis)
IFU Sensitivity Simulation Tool (D. Law)
IFU Radial Velocity Sensitivity Simulation Tool (D. Law?)
Photometric and Astrometric Catalog (DENIS, 2MASS,
LSST, PanStarrs)
– Ephemeris Calculator (SKYBOT2 in Paris, web-based)
3
Current Status
• Pre-observing, Observing, and Post-observing tasks have
been identified and documented for most of the key
science drivers:
–
–
–
–
Galaxy Assembly IFU and imaging cases
Nearby AGNs IFU case
Exoplanets imaging case
Minor Planet Multiplicity imaging case
• Galactic center (both imaging for astrometry, and IFU for
radial velocities) needs work.
– Rough draft for imaging based on the other science cases
– Plan to ask A. Ghez to look it over and modify observing
tasks to reflect how they actually perform their observations
4
Remaining Action Items
Before Release 1
• Finish Key Science Driver observing scenarios
– Finish NIR Imager observation of Galaxies
– Ask Ghez to review astrometry section & who should write GC RV
section + minimum/goal IFU size
• Imaging simulation tool
– Check integration time & sampling for planets around low mass
stars using Marchis’ tool & Sean’s detector numbers
– Make this tool available on Wiki
• Interferometer
– Insert and update science requirements for interferometer from
KAON 456 (p61 Table 30) in consultation with Sam Ragland
5
Remaining Action Items
Before Release 1 (continued)
• Daytime Ops
– Interact with Campbell to flesh out daytime ops
• Section on Use Cases needs a lot of work
– With the exception of the AO acquisition use case, this section has
not yet been started
• Review observing tasks for various science cases and
clean up notes & comments in the margin of the document
• Need to define a path forward for establishing PSF metrics
& requirements
