My definition is « compatible » with the definitions of Marit H. and Andreas P. The core idea is to relate the identity to a set of reference, as Marit H. and Andreas P. did in their definition for anonymity. FIDIS, WP2 Page - 3 © V.I.P, Jaquet-Chiffelle, 2003 HES bernoise, University of applied sciences research center Brussels, 2.12.03 I think that 1. To each person is associated a set of attributes that can be used to characterize / distinguish these persons. 2. Each person belongs to many communities (e.g. employees of a company, inhabitants of a country, members of a family, etc) 3. The « identity » of a person is not absolute; it must be related to a community. FIDIS, WP2 Page - 4 © V.I.P, Jaquet-Chiffelle, 2003 HES bernoise, University of applied sciences research center Brussels, 2.12.03 My definition for « identity » Identity: An identity is any subset of the attributes of a person which uniquely characterizes this person within a community. 2 In particular, I only consider the identity with respect to a set reference: a community. The identity is not absolute. 2 Definition that I shared and presented during the workshop FIDIS, WP2 Page - 5 © V.I.P, Jaquet-Chiffelle, 2003 HES bernoise, University of applied sciences research center Brussels, 2.12.03 Example Bob can be the identity of a person within a classroom if there is only one Bob in this class (the community is the class) cannot be the identity of a US citizen (the community is the US population) FIDIS, WP2 Page - 6 © V.I.P, Jaquet-Chiffelle, 2003 HES bernoise, University of applied sciences research center Brussels, 2.12.03 Identifyability We could similarly define 3 identifyability by: « Identifyability is the state of being identifiable within a set of subjects, the identifyability set. » 3 Compare the proposition made during the workshop by Mireille Hildebrandt, inspired by the definitions of anonymity of Marit and others (1), and my definition (2) of identity' FIDIS, WP2 Page - 7 © V.I.P, Jaquet-Chiffelle, 2003 HES bernoise, University of applied sciences research center Brussels, 2.12.03 Conclusion 1. My definition for « identity » relates the identity to a set of reference: the community. 2. This approach gives a definition for the identity which is « compatible » with the one of anonymity: the identity as well as the anonymity are not absolute; they depend on a set of reference. 3. The similarity between the definition of « identifyability » proposed by Mireille Hildebrandt during the workshop and the now classical definition of « anonymity » (Marit Hansen and Andreas Pfitzman) allows to compare the duality of both concepts.
