MANE 6980 MASTERS PROJECT
Progress Report #1
A Comparison of the AGMA Gear Design Stresses, the Lewis Bending Stress,
and the Stresses Calculated by the Finite Element Method for Spur Gears

Status of AGMA Design Stresses and
Factors of Safety
Microsoft Excel
calculations for the Lewis
Bending stress (static
analysis) and both the
pitting contact stress and
bending stresses (dynamic
analysis) are complete.
Next step is to
incorporate the analysis
into the report, as well as
derive the Lewis bending
equation (see right).

stress, respectively. Equations and image taken from AGMA 2001D04 (see Report for Refs.)

Status of FEA Load Case #1: Static Analysis
to Model the Lewis Bending Equation
Model is running, and
the stress distribution
looks realistic.
Currently have test
inputs, so the stresses
are not accurate yet.
Next step is to change
inputs to match
corresponding Excel
analysis, refine the
mesh, and compare the
results to the Excel
analysis.

Max stress is found on both
sides of the tooth in the root,
which makes sense for a bending
state of stress

face: fixed in
all directions

Load applied
to a node on
this edge,
coupled to
entire face.

Status of FEA Load Case #2: Contact
Analysis to Model the AGMA Equations
Model is running. The
stress distribution looks
reasonable, but contact
stresses do not make
sense.
Current inputs do not
match the Excel analysis
yet.
Next step is to
troubleshoot bad
contact stress
distribution, match FEA
inputs to Excel inputs,
and refine the mesh.

Gear is
bounded in
all DOFs
Pinion is bounded in
all DOFs except
rotation about its axis
