Wear Testing of Self-Lubricated
Bearing Materials
• Army Corps of Engineers tested ~10 PTFE based selflubricating bearing materials under high load, low speed
oscillating conditions for 120 hrs (approximately equivalent to
14 years of service life)
• Testing reported depth of wear per 100 hours of testing
• Project will calculate the wear coefficients of the materials
using Archard’s Law

= 𝑃𝑉
𝑡 𝐻
Other PTFE Wear Testing
• Wear coefficients calculated from COE testing
will be compared to other determined wear
coefficients for similar materials
• LSU testing – pin on disk testing of PTFE based
composites
• Gdansk University testing – planar sliding of
commercial PTFE based bearing materials
Edge Loading of Bearings
• Misalignment of bearings can lead to a large
reduction in contact area
• COE simulated misalignment in their testing
• Compared test results to ABAQUS model that
determines contact area
